Snow Alert
The National Weather Service has indicated a possible major winter weather event starting Sunday morning, January 31 into early Tuesday morning, February 2 with accumulations projected anywhere between 2 to10 inches. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will begin to treat City streets today. Check the City’s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for updates as we will post any possible trash and recycling collection changes.

Closure and Detour at Navahoe Street
Maryland State Highway Administration is planning to close Navahoe Street between US 1 and the Campus Village Shopping Center entrance on Navahoe Street on or about Wednesday, February 3. The street closure will last about 3 weeks, weather permitting. The reason for the street closure is to replace an existing sewer main along this portion of Navahoe Street. Attached is a picture of the detour plan.

University of Maryland Child Development Center
The University of Maryland’s Child Development Center, operated by Bright Horizons, is scheduled to open February 1, 2021.
The Center is located on the City’s property at 4601 Calvert Road. In return for leasing the property at no cost to the University, City residents not affiliated with the University have priority for 14 slots at the Center. City residents who are affiliated with the University are also given a priority. For more information, visit www.brighthorizons.com/umd.

Hotel Resiliency Relief Fund
The County has launched the $11 million Hotel Resiliency Relief Fund. Applications are open until February 24. Hotels and similar establishments that have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic may apply. Applications are being accepted until February 24. MD Governor Hogan Proposes $1Billion COVID-19 Relief Legislation
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced plans to ask lawmakers to approve a state coronavirus relief package of individual payments for lower-income Marylanders, help for small businesses and a slew of tax cuts that would cost about $1 billion. The Department of Public Works operational snow plans for the snow event starting on January 31:
- DPW crews are treating all city streets with salt brine today.
- DPW will have (2) 12 hour shifts starting Sunday morning and working two shifts through the event until ending.
- DPW will have 24 hour coverage in our dispatch office starting Sunday
- Trash and Recycling pickup will be determined based on weather forecast Saturday or Sunday
- Brush pickup may be suspended on Monday

Pepco Electric Power Line Clearance Work
PEPCO will be continuing their electric power line tree clearance work in 2021. The planned work is scheduled to occur along Metzerott Road and in the College Park Woods neighborhood, as well as along Route 193 between Rhode Island Ave and US Route 1, and will continue north on Route 1 into Beltsville. There are tree removals planned along Metzerott Road near the PEPCO sub-station across from the Archives entrance, which have been approved by Prince George’s County as Metzerott Road is a County maintained road. Replacement trees will be planted when the line clearance work is complete. An uprooting/leaning black cherry tree is also planned for removal along Route 193 adjacent to the Attick Towers garden. A small size maturing tree has been requested to replace this tree.

There were 4 Municipal Infractions issued for one violation of the Noise Ordinance. There were none issued for Article I, 141-1 Danger to Public Safety/Health or Article II, 141-13 Unruly Social Gatherings. |

1/12 Contract officer issued 2 citations to pedestrians for failure to obey the upright hand signal at Baltimore Avenue and Knox Road.
1/16 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue and issued 12 “Mobile” Camera violations.
1/17 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Saint Andrews Place and DePauw Place. 2 citations and 4 warnings were issued.
1/19 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Saint Andrews Place and Duke Street. 2 citations and 5 warnings were issued.
1/20 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 4800 block of Greenbelt Road and issued 45 “Mobile” Camera violations.
1/21 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Edgewood Road and 51st Avenue. 4 citations and 5 warnings were issued.
1/21 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 4800 block of Greenbelt Road and issued 13 “Mobile” Camera violations.
There were several premise checks conducted throughout the City.

Bike Lane Design Meeting
Please join College Park staff and consultants RK&K at 7:00 p.m. on February 8 to learn more about the design of protected bike lanes on Rhode Island Avenue between Greenbelt Road and Muskogee Street. The City has been coordinating with Prince George’s County DPW&T and WMATA to improve safety for all road users along this stretch of Rhode Island Avenue. The City will present updated plans and will accept public comments and feedback before finalizing the design.
