Pollinator Week - Save the Date!

From June 20 through 26, 2021, the City will be celebrating National Pollinator Week. The Bee City USA Committee is inviting all City residents to celebrate this year’s Pollinator Week with a safe and fun family-friendly activity to learn about pollination and protect our local pollinators: the ULTIMATE POLLINATOR BINGO OF COLLEGE PARK! Three lucky participants will even win a bee hotel just by submitting their bingo card! ANNOUNCEMENTS
Bulk Trash and Special Trash Collections

NEW BULK TRASH CHANGES STARTING JULY 1, 2021.

For a single-family, owner-occupied residence: Up to four (4) bulky refuse collections per calendar
year, with a maximum total of 20 bulky refuse items, will be free of charge to the resident.
 
For a single-family rental property that pays for City trash services: Up to four (4) bulky refuse collections per calendar year, with a maximum total of 29 bulky refuse items, will be free of charge.
 
For quantities and/or frequency more than stated above, a $20 collection fee per item over the allowable number of items will be imposed. A waiver may be available for major extenuating circumstances on a limited basis.
 
All bulky refuse collections must be scheduled in advance and the caller must identify the quantity and
type of items when scheduling a collection.
 
Bulky refuse items must be set out neatly and separated by type. Department of Public Works staff will provide guidance when you make your appointment. Call 240-487-3590, email [email protected] or visit: www.collegeparkmd.gov/specialcollections for further details.

Free Summer Parking at the City's Downtown Garage

The City is Hiring!

Position Available: Part-Time Contract Secretary
 
The City is seeking a part-time Contract Secretary to attend, record, and prepare minutes for evening Advisory Board meetings. This position requires a reliable person with strong grammar and secretarial skills to prepare a summary of the proceedings, make approved revisions, and provide a final set of minutes in a timely manner. This assignment does not require word-for-word reporting. Meetings are currently being conducted via Zoom, but will normally be held at public facilities in College Park on weekday evenings.
 
Contract rate is $22.00 per hour, with a guaranteed minimum of two hours per meeting, plus payment for preparation of minutes at $11.00 per half-hour. We estimate six to twelve hours per month to start, depending upon board assignments. Please submit a cover letter and resume to: College Park City Clerk’s Office, 8400 Baltimore Avenue, Suite 375, College Park, MD 20740, or email to [email protected]
The Jack Perry Award

From May 15 to July 15 each year, any resident, neighborhood association or organization in the City may submit a nomination for the Jack Perry Award. Nominations should be submitted in writing to the City Clerk for the City of College Park, 8400 Baltimore Avenue, Suite 375, College Park, MD, 20740, or by e-mail to [email protected]. Nominations will be reviewed by a Committee that includes a member of the Perry family. This non-monetary award will be presented by the City Council in the fall. Metro’s Summer 2021 Platform Improvement Project

Starting Saturday May 29, Metro’s Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Prince George’s Plaza and West Hyattsville stations will be closed for the Platform Improvement Project.

There were no municipal infractions issued for the Noise Ordinance, Article I, 141-1 Danger to Public Safety/Health or Article II, 141-13 Unruly Social Gatherings.
Weekly Highlights of Contract Police Activity
May 31 - June 3, 2021
5/28 Contract officer conducted a truck inspection in the 9100 block of Rhode Island Avenue. One citation was issued as the truck was taken out of service.

5/29 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust in the 8100 block of Baltimore Avenue. The driver was issued 5 citations.

5/29 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue and issued 7 “Mobile” Camera violations.

5/29 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust at Rhode Island Avenue and Cherokee Street. The driver was issued 1 warning and 1 SERO citations.

5/30 Contract officer responded to the sound of shots in the 7300 block of Radcliffe Drive. Area was check with negative results.

5/31 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust in the 8600 block of Baltimore Avenue. The driver was issued 2 citations and 1 warning.

5/31 Contract officer responded to a call for service for a suspicious male at 4300 Hartwick Road at the Terrapin Row parking garage. The male suspect was very intoxicated and vandalized several moped scooters. Student referral was submitted as the officer will apply for a criminal warrant.

6/1 Contract officer on routine patrol in the 4800 block of Berwyn House Road when he was flagged down by a male that was having homicidal and suicidal thoughts. The male was placed in custody and transported to Laurel regional Hospital for EPS evaluation.

6/1 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue and issued 65 “Mobile” Camera violations.

6/1 Contract officer stopped an ATV in the parking lot in the 10100 block of Baltimore Avenue. The ATV was reported stolen as the officer impounded the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.

6/3 Contract officer conducted an enforcement for loud exhaust at 51st Avenue and Cree Lane. No violations.

6/3 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Saint Andrews Place and Duke Street. 2 citations and 3 warnings were issued.

Duvall Field Park Design Meeting

A community meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 7:00 pm to discuss the park design at Duvall Field. Three conceptual design alternatives will be presented for review and feedback. Please attend and let the City staff and consultant know your preferences for activities and amenities to be included in the final design. Mosquito Workshop

Please join the City of College Park’s Committee for a Better Environment and Stephen Panossian, Contractual Agricultural Inspector II, and Catharine Love, Contractual Agricultural Inspector II, at the Maryland Department of Agriculture, Mosquito Control Section – on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. for a Mosquito Workshop.

This webinar will cover the primary mosquito pest to homeowners, the Asian Tiger Mosquito. Virtual attendees will learn about its biology, habits, and habitats around a resident's home. Methods to reduce its population, including the Gravid Aedes trap (GAT), and use of repellents will also be discussed. Community Public Safety Meetings

Please join City Elected Officials, Police, Department of Public Services staff, and your neighbors from all around the City, for an informative monthly community meeting.

The June meeting will be taking place on Monday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. via zoom. Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/96168994626. The focus for the month of June will be Parking Enforcement.

This community meeting will discuss City-wide crime statistics, recent incidents of public interest, neighborhood watch tips, and special public safety related topics.

To facilitate City-wide participation, these will be virtual meetings that you may join in from your home. Please invite your neighbors so that this useful information may be shared throughout the City. The meetings will occur every 2nd Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
