Pollinator Week
From June 20 through 26, 2021, the City will be celebrating National Pollinator Week. The Bee City USA Committee is inviting all City residents to celebrate this year’s Pollinator Week with a safe and fun family-friendly activity to learn about pollination and protect our local pollinators: the ULTIMATE POLLINATOR BINGO OF COLLEGE PARK! Three lucky participants will even win a bee hotel just by submitting their bingo card! More information and the bingo card is available at www.collegeparkmd.gov/pollinators.

All City Offices Closed in Observance of Independence Day |
All City offices will be closed on Monday, July 5 in observance of Independence Day. Refuse and recycling will occur one day later than normal during this holiday week. Special Collections for brush and bulky items will only be scheduled for Friday, July 9 of this holiday week.

Bulk Trash and Special Trash Collections
NEW BULK TRASH CHANGES STARTING JULY 1, 2021.
For a single-family, owner-occupied residence: Up to four (4) bulky refuse collections per calendar
year, with a maximum total of 20 bulky refuse items, will be free of charge to the resident.
For a single-family rental property that pays for City trash services: Up to four (4) bulky refuse collections per calendar year, with a maximum total of 29 bulky refuse items, will be free of charge.
For quantities and/or frequency more than stated above, a $20 collection fee per item over the allowable number of items will be imposed. A waiver may be available for major extenuating circumstances on a limited basis.
Please note: Residents will have the opportunity to bring items to Public Works at no cost during the six cleanup Saturdays which are usually held in the Fall and Spring.
All bulky refuse collections must be scheduled in advance and the caller must identify the quantity and
type of items when scheduling a collection.

Position Available: Part-Time Contract Secretary
The City is seeking a part-time Contract Secretary to attend, record, and prepare minutes for evening Advisory Board meetings. This position requires a reliable person with strong grammar and secretarial skills to prepare a summary of the proceedings, make approved revisions, and provide a final set of minutes in a timely manner. This assignment does not require word-for-word reporting. Meetings are currently being conducted via Zoom, but will normally be held at public facilities in College Park on weekday evenings.
Contract rate is $22.00 per hour, with a guaranteed minimum of two hours per meeting, plus payment for preparation of minutes at $11.00 per half-hour. We estimate six to twelve hours per month to start, depending upon board assignments. The Jack Perry Award
From May 15 to July 15 each year, any resident, neighborhood association or organization in the City may submit a nomination for the Jack Perry Award. Nominations should be submitted in writing to the City Clerk for the City of College Park, 8400 Baltimore Avenue, Suite 375, College Park, MD, 20740, or by e-mail to [email protected]. Nominations will be reviewed by a Committee that includes a member of the Perry family. This non-monetary award will be presented by the City Council in the fall. Metro’s Summer 2021 Platform Improvement Project
Starting Saturday May 29, Metro’s Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Prince George’s Plaza and West Hyattsville stations will be closed for the Platform Improvement Project.

Mosquito Control
Mosquito Control: The City of College Park cooperates with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to identify and control mosquito populations. The program consists of:
- Larviciding standing water. Treatments are made by MDA personnel to known areas of standing water to control mosquito larva that will prevent development into adult mosquitos. This is done every 4-6 weeks.
- Spraying to control adult mosquitoes has begun and runs through early September. Spraying may occur in College Park weather permitting after dusk on Wednesday evenings. They do not spray individual properties; they treat neighborhoods that meet certain thresholds.
- Resident responsibility.
The Prince George’s County Health Department reminds residents to follow the three D’s to keep mosquitoes away:

Drain: Standing water attracts mosquitoes. Empty out any outside water containers near your home at least once per week
-
Dress: Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Defend: Properly apply an EPA-registered repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR 3535, or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. For permanent areas of standing water (ponds, rain barrels, etc), contact the City's Department of Public Works for a mosquito torpedo which releases an insect growth regulator in water that prevents adult mosquito development.
