ANNOUNCEMENTS
All City Offices Closed on Memorial Day

All City offices will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2021. Refuse and recycling will occur one day later than normal during this holiday week:

  • Monday collections will occur Tuesday, June 1
  • Tuesday collections will occur Wednesday, June 2
  • Wednesday collections will occur Thursday, June 3
 
Special collections for brush and bulky items will only be scheduled for Friday, June 4, of this holiday week. Call 240-487-3590 or email [email protected] to schedule a pickup before setting items out to the curb.
Position Available: Part-Time Contract Secretary
 
The City is seeking a part-time Contract Secretary to attend, record, and prepare minutes for evening Advisory Board meetings. This position requires a reliable person with strong grammar and secretarial skills to prepare a summary of the proceedings, make approved revisions, and provide a final set of minutes in a timely manner. This assignment does not require word-for-word reporting. Meetings are currently being conducted via Zoom, but will normally be held at public facilities in College Park on weekday evenings.
 
Contract rate is $22.00 per hour, with a guaranteed minimum of two hours per meeting, plus payment for preparation of minutes at $11.00 per half-hour. We estimate six to twelve hours per month to start, depending upon board assignments. Please submit a cover letter and resume to: College Park City Clerk’s Office, 8400 Baltimore Avenue, Suite 375, College Park, MD 20740, or email to [email protected]
WMATA's Summer 2021 Platform Improvement Project

The Summer 2021 Platform Improvement Project will impact many people who rely on Metro. That’s why they need your help sharing this information with the constituents and communities you serve. 2021 Youth Summer Camp Scholarships

The City of College Park is moving forward with offering our annual summer camp scholarships. Youth (rising K-12) who reside in the City of College Park are eligible to apply. Scholarships are granted up to a maximum of $400 per student. Applications are due by Friday, May 21, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Notifications will be sent on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

Prince George's County Vaccine Outreach Team

The Prince George’s County Vaccine Outreach Team is going door-to-door in several communities in the City, in addition to calling and texting residents across the county. If the team knocks on your door or reaches out, please do your best to answer. Canvassers will be knocking on doors every day from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. They are helping residents schedule appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations and providing information on government resources like rental assistance.
The Jack Perry Award

From May 15 to July 15 each year, any resident, neighborhood association or organization in the City may submit a nomination for the Jack Perry Award. Nominations should be submitted in writing to the City Clerk for the City of College Park, 8400 Baltimore Avenue, Suite 375, College Park, MD, 20740, or by e-mail to [email protected]. Nominations will be reviewed by a Committee that includes a member of the Perry family. This non-monetary award will be presented by the City Council in the fall. WMATA Encourages Green/Yellow Line Riders to Plan Ahead for Track Work in May

Metro is reminding Green and Yellow line customers to plan ahead for scheduled track work May 1 through May 9. That will require free shuttle buses to replace trains at four stations over one weekend and the weeklong closure of West Hyattsville.

The work will occur during the previously scheduled May 1-2 weekend shutdowns of West Hyattsville, Prince George's Plaza, College Park-U of MD, and Greenbelt, and during the week of May 3 through May 9, when West Hyattsville will be closed. Update from the Department of Public Works:

  • Next Friday, May 21, 2021 the Department of Public Works will be closed from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. for an internal event. Please plan accordingly.

  • Save the date: June 17, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. the City’s Committee for a Better Environment will co-host a virtual Mosquito presentation with the Maryland Department of Agriculture who will present information on mosquito control and GAT mosquito trap usage. More information will be forthcoming, including a link to register.

Noise and Nuisance Municipal Infractions
May 3 - May 9, 2021
There were four municipal infractions issued for two violations of the Noise Ordinance and none for Article I, 141-1 Danger to Public Safety/Health or Article II, 141-13 Unruly Social Gatherings.
Weekly Highlights of Contract Police Activity
April 30 - May 6, 2021
4/30 Contract officer responded to a call for service for an armed person at the Holiday Inn located at 10000 Baltimore Ave. Based on the description given the contract officer observed the suspect arrive at the location. As the suspect noticed the officer, he attempted to conceal a backpack and made furtive movements to hide an object. Further investigation based on probable cause the officer located a 9mm handgun. The suspect was arrested without incident. Further investigation revealed the suspect is prohibited from possessing a firearm in the state of Maryland due to a previous felony firearm possession conviction. Investigators learned later in the night that the suspect was wanted in Puerto Rico for homicide.

4/30 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust and tinted brake lights at Greenbelt Road and Rhode Island Avenue. 2 ERO's and 1 warning citation were issued to the driver.

5/1 Contract officers responded to a loud party call in the 7000 block of Wake Forest Drive. A student referral was submitted.

5/3 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Edgewood Road and 51st Avenue. 2 citations and 2 warnings were issued.

5/3 Contract officer conducted a enforcement for loud exhaust at 51st Avenue and Cree Lane. No violations.
5/4 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Edgewood Road and 51st Avenue. 2 citations and 2 warnings were issued.

5/4 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Saint Andrews Place and Duke Street. 3 citations and 2 warnings were issued.

5/4 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 9000 Baltimore Avenue and issued 38 “Mobile” Camera violations.

5/5 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 9000 Baltimore Avenue and issued 36 “Mobile” Camera violations.

5/5 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Saint Andrews Place and Duke Street. 1 citation and 3 warnings were issued.

5/5 Contract officer responded to a check on the welfare in the 5100 block of Navahoe Street. The resident was found deceased as the investigation is ongoing.

5/6 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust at Greenbelt Road and University Blvd. The driver was issued a citation.

Bike to Work Day

The 20th Anniversary of the Washington, DC region’s Bike to Work Day is coming up on Friday, May 21, 2021. Grief & Growth Gardens Event

Please join the City's Department of Youth, Family & Senior Services on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. to acknowledge the losses of the past year and celebrate your resilience! Register for the live workshop and request materials at collegeparkmd.gov/griefandgrowthgardenmay2021.

Workshop kits (planter, flower seeds, art supplies) will be available for contact-less pick up at the City's Youth and Family Services building (4912 Nantucket Rd.) on May 18 and 20 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and on May 19 from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. for registered participants who have requested a kit (while supplies last). Participants are welcome to use their own materials as well.
