Thank you to all who came out for Bike to Work Day 2018! We had about 150 people register for the City Hall pit stop and despite the rain had quite a few intrepid bicyclists come out and join us. For pictures of the event, click here .
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Hollywood Farmers Market Grand Opening
The 6th Annual Grand Opening of the Hollywood Farmers Market is this Saturday, May 19! 

As part of the celebration, there'll be a ribbon cutting at 10:00 a.m., live music, face painting and a petting zoo! The giant chess set will be out for people to play as well as chalk and bubbles. 

With all the fun stuff going on, don't forget to check out all the farmers market vendors! The market opens at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. every Saturday through November.
Duvall Field Closed due to Rain
Because of all the rain (and future rain) this week, Duvall Field will be closed through the weekend.
City Offices Closed on Memorial Day
All City Offices will be closed Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day. 

Refuse and recycling will occur one day later than normal during this holiday week: 
  • Monday collections will occur Tuesday, May 29 
  • Tuesday collections will occur Wednesday, May 30 
  • Wednesday collections will occur Thursday, May 31 

Special collections for brush and bulky items will only be scheduled for Friday, June 1, of this holiday week. You must call 240-487-3590 or email  [email protected]  to schedule a pickup before setting your items out on the curb.
Senior Spring Fling
We had a great time at the Senior Spring Fling on Wednesday. City residents 62 and older got to learn about the City's Senior Services; the weekly Senior Social Activity Center, free limited transportation, and how the City can help improve their quality of life. The event also featured the College Park Arts Exchange had a glass painting activity, there were lots of games, raffles, a DJ and plenty of fun.

Pet Microchip Clinics in June
On Saturday, June 2 at the Hollywood Market and on Sunday, June 17 at the Downtown Farmers Market, the  City of College Park Animal Control will offer FREE microchipping for dogs and cats for City residents (or only $20 for non-residents). 

Microchipping is a quick and pretty painless procedure that can help return pets to their families if lost. We encourage residents to bring their furry family members to participate in this free program!

Please make sure that all pets are properly restrained (leash, carrier, etc.) for safety. City residents, don't forget your proof of residency!
Happy Birthday mBike!
mBike is celebrating it's second birthday on May 4 and we're celebrating all month long with a " mBikeSpringFling " two hour free ride code!

Enjoy the beautiful weather by bicycling to where you need or want to go with mBike.
Free Summer Parking
From May 26 through August 19, 2018, the Downtown College Park Garage and the City Hall Lot will offer free parking Monday through Friday after 5:00 pm and all-day on Saturdays and Sundays.

Try a new restaurant for dinner or visit a new store during these free parking summer weekends and nights in Downtown College Park!
CITY DEPARTMENTS
Department of Public Works
The landscape crew has been planting summer flowers in various areas across the City. Planting beds along Edmonston Road, Edgewood Road and St. Andrews Place medians are complete; the next area on the schedule is Calvert Hills.

A Department crew power washed the Downtown Parking Garage stairwell and sidewalks along Baltimore Ave at Nando’s Peri Peri.

The Department conducted back-flow tests at the Downtown Parking Garage, Calvert Road School, Duvall Field, and Animal Control building at the Department of Public Works.

A pre-bid meeting for RFP #CP-18-09 Historical Window Repairs Work was held earlier this week. We had six contractors attend. Bids are due June 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

Spring is a great time of year for tree planting. City of College Park property owners can utilize the Tree Canopy Enhancement Program (TCEP) for reimbursement of the cost of an approved tree up to $150.00 annually for tree(s) planted on their residential lot. Backyard Composting Bins are available to purchase from the Department for $20.00 (City residents) and $40.00 (non-residents).

Mosquito Spraying and Exclusion from Spraying
  • MDA is looking for some areas around Cherokee/Delaware Street to put a new kind of mosquito trap on a trial basis. MDA would need permission to access the private yard on a weekly basis, no dogs on property. Please call the City Sustainability Coordinator, Janet for more information 240-487-3593.
  • The City of College Park cooperates with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to identify and control mosquito populations. Larviciding treatments are made by MDA personnel. Wednesday night is the designated day when spraying for adult mosquitoes will occur in College Park. Spraying begins in early June. MDA has initiated a new spray request procedure; to put in a spray request please click here.
  • Request for Exemption from Adult Mosquito Control Services. Any resident who wishes to have his/her property excluded from adult mosquito control pesticide applications by truck-mounted ultra low volume (ULV) sprayers must fill out this form annually. Click here for the application

SMARTLEAF® compost and wood mulch are available!

Delivery is available Monday-Friday for an additional fee. Compost is $28.00 per cubic yard and wood mulch is $12.00 per cubic yard. Material may be picked up at Public Works, during business hours.

Yard Waste Carts
Yard Wast Carts are back in stock and they have been rolling out the door! The beige yard waste carts are offered to City residents for $25.00. Purchase and pick up carts at Public Works - 9217 51 st Avenue, Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can also call 301-487-3590 to make other arrangements.
Weekly Highlights of Contract Police Activity
May 4 - 10, 2018
5/4 Contract officer responded to a call for service for a report of a Breaking and Entering in progress in the 5000 block of Lakeland Road. Contract officer was the first unit on the scene and assisted with the perimeter and canvassing of the neighborhood. Investigation is ongoing. 

5/4 Contract officer responded to a call for service in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue in reference to a failure to pay for services (Taxi Cab). The suspect became disorderly and was placed under arrest and transported to DOC for processing.

5/7 Contract officer conducted speed enforcement in the 4900 block of Greenbelt Road. 4 citations, 6 warnings and 1 ERO were issued.

5/9 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Edmonston Road and Knoxville Road. 3 citations and 2 warnings were issued.

5/10 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Edmonston Road and Knoxville Road. 4 citations and 4 warnings were issued.

5/10 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Rhode Island Avenue and Hollywood Road. 6 warning citations were issued.

On May 10 high visibility patrols were conducted in the Old Town Neighborhood due to the Senior Pub Crawl as we experienced larger crowds than normal.

Memorial Day Observance

 Join us on Memorial Day, Monday May 28 at the College Park Veterans Memorial as we honor those who have given their lives in service to our country. 

Guests can submit names of fallen service members who were in service to our country, by writing their names on index cards available next to the podium. We encourage you to bring pictures of family members who served or are currently serving in the armed services.

The National Orchestral Institute + Festival presents The Ad elphi Quartet. Join NOI’s returning string quartet in residence for an afternoon of music and conversation. The group is comprised of primarily New York based Sphinx musicians. The Sphinx Organization dedicates itself to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. These talented musicians will showcase their expertise in a free, hour long performance followed by a complimentary lunch with the artists.
