Being from Delaware, there were many fruit varieties that I was totally unfamiliar with when I moved to California. When I did a farming apprenticeship in Sacramento years ago, I was introduced to Fuyu Persimmons and quickly fell in love with them. They have a unique flavor that stands out from traditional fruits. They have a slightly sweet, but mild flavor, with a crisp, crunchy texture. Persimmons should be left on the counter at room temperature and are best enjoyed when they are eaten before they get soft. They are available in the CSA store in 5lb cases for $15.
