THE FEDS ARE POINTING TO STUDENT SAFETY AND PRIVACY AS TOP ISSUES
THE US DEPT OF EDUCATION IS TRYING to clear up the confusion about how student privacy laws (FERPA) are affected by the new school safety guidance. Their FAQ's include info on the intersection of FERPA law, the right to privacy, and a district's ability to provide personally identifiable information in the interest of school safety. Pressing the issue further, they clarify that "law enforcement unit records" are not the same as "educational records."
