We’ve been keeping a secret. This November, Family Service Agency’s Youth Programming team will open DeKalb County’s first Homeless Youth and Transitional Living Shelter. This milestone is more than a new program; it is a lifeline for local teens and young adults with nowhere to call home.
In DeKalb Community Unit School District, 3.4% of students were identified as homeless under the McKinney–Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a number that continues to rise. Countywide, 14.6% of children live in poverty. Behind every statistic is a young person facing impossible choices, where to sleep, how to stay in school, and whom to trust.
This shelter will provide stability, warmth, and hope. It represents our community’s shared belief that every young person deserves safety and opportunity. As we prepare to open our doors, we invite you to be part of this historic moment and help us build the foundation for brighter futures.
