Charlevoix Dragon Boat Festival

The Charlevoix Circle of Arts will host an inaugural DragonBoat Festival on August 4th at Ferry Beach Park in Charlevoix. The festival is a fundraising initiative to help support their mission to cultivate a more inspired and educated community through the arts. They are seeking community involvement ranging from sponsorships, creation of teams and volunteers. In the process, participants will experience the beauty and energy of this ancient festival. DragonBoat Races are a rapidly growing sport combining rich Chinese traditions, competition, community building and a great deal of fun!  

Charlevoix Area Humane Society WoofStock 2018

The Charlevoix Area Humane Society will host the fifth
annual WoofStock Pet and Music Festival. The day will be a full day event to celebrate a wide variety of music in support the North West Michigan Region and the animals we love.

This festive fundraiser will be held at the facility and grounds of the beautiful Mackinaw Trails Winery on 131 just south of Petoskey Michigan. There will be 10+ bands performing during all day and early evening on 2 stages, and a hosted open mike stage.

The setting and lineup will give enthusiast several venues and a great variety of entertainment options.

The Michigan Historic Preservation Network with local partners the City of Charlevoix, Charlevoix Main Street, the Charlevoix Historical Society, and MYPreservation are pleased to announce a preservation workshop series in August and September. The series of three workshops will bring old home experts to the community to share knowledge and provide opportunities for participants to try their hand at some basic old home maintenance tasks. “I’m excited that Charlevoix was chosen to host preservation workshops,” said Lindsey Dotson, Charlevoix Main Street Director. “Historic homeowners, contractors, and downtown building owners will benefit from these workshops in more ways than one."

Pre-scheduled appointments are recommended and walk-ins are available on a first come, first served basis. Mark Kistler Summer Art Camp

Charlevoix Public Library and Charelvoix Waterfront Art Fair present summer art camp featuring Mark Kistler for kids 6 to 16. Parents watched Mark Kistler as “Commander Mark” on National Public Television’s “The Secret City” and “Mark Kistler’s Imagination Station” in the 1980’s. Now, the new generation of children have the opportunity to learn from nationally acclaimed art educator Mark Kistler. Children will have dynamic drawing lessons progressing through a series of fun, creative pencil power adventures, (Parents are invited to participate!). Each day, Mark will explore a different theme of creative discovery. These are Summer Art Camps that your child will never forget!

Historical Society Presents Civil War Photography Program

The Charlevoix Historical Society presents an illustrated program on Civil War Photography on Tuesday, August 7 at 7:00 pm at the Depot, Depot Beach. Speaking will be Dr. Kenneth McBride, chief archaeologist for the Camp Nelson National Historic Site near Lexington, Kentucky. In summer 2017, Dr. McBride excavated the remains of a photographic studio at the site, and will show photos from the dig and also significant photographic artifacts discovered from this period of the beginning of modern American photography. Raven Hill has been chosen to host the national Smithsonian Museum on Main Street Water|Ways exhibit. In addition to the Smithsonian exhibit, a variety of water-related programs will be presented by Raven Hill and local water, history and arts organizations over the course of the six-week exhibit. The Smithsonian Water|Ways Exhibit is a chance to highlight, for the community-at-large, the importance of northern Michigan’s water as a natural resource to be treasured for its historical and cultural importance.

The Charlevoix County Commission on Aging invites the entire community to t he 39th Charlevoix County Senior Picnic & Health Expo at the Harvest Barn Church in East Jordan. Picnic tickets are currently on sale and you must have a ticket to attend. Tickets are being sold through the Commission on Aging Office, at the Charlevoix, East Jordan, and Boyne City Senior Centers and if there are tickets available, they will be sold at the door the day of the picnic. Tickets are the same price as last year at $5.00 for a Senior (60+), and $8.00 for a Non-senior.

Leadership Charlevoix County announces request for community project ideas.
Leadership Charlevoix County (LCC) is now accepting proposals for its annual Community Service Project from local nonprofit organizations.

The Community Service Project is an integral part of the hands-on experience of LCC participants. Each year, the class decides upon a Community Service Project which will benefit an area of Charlevoix County. The project involves all members of the leadership class and focuses on team building, project management, and leadership skills.

The deadline to submit Community Service Project ideas from local nonprofit organizations is September 1, 2018. The LCC Class of 2018-2019 will review the proposals at their kickoff retreat on Beaver Island in September. After selection and board approval, it is expected that the class will make their decision by mid-November.

4Front Credit Union has named Zach Eychaner vice president of its new Digital Services department. Eychaner guides the delivery of streamlined account management tools through non-branch channels, including 4Front’s contact center, virtual banking and related platforms, and VideoTeller –4Front’s recently introduced interactive teller machines.

Meghan Morelli has joined 4Front Credit Union as its Community Relations
Specialist. Morelli will further enhance 4Front’s community
engagement, managing the credit union’s sponsorship and charitable giving
efforts. She’ll also partner with area schools to coordinate financial literacy programs and connect 4Front team members with impactful local initiatives.

The Charlevoix Circle of Arts is granted $10,000 from the Charles M. & Joan R. Taylor Foundation, Inc. for a technology system to support their Inner Circle Gallery Talk Series.

In December 2017, the Charlevoix Circle of Arts was awarded a $10,000 grant from Charles M. & Joan R. Taylor Foundation, Inc. to purchase an audio-visual system to be used to enhance their growing lecture and workshop series. With these funds, the Circle has put in place a state-of-the-art projection system for visiting artists and presenters in support of the Inner Circle Gallery Talk series.

Students Donate to Pediatric Patients- McLaren Northern Michigan

What started as an AP Literature assignment turned into a game-changer for McLaren Northern Michigan pediatric patients. Mikayla Lowell and Eliza Rider raised funds through making and selling friendship bracelets and doing a bike-a-thon from Petoskey to Charlevoix. With the money raised, they purchased two Push Around Buggy Car Wagons for pediatric patients. Children who come to McLaren Northern Michigan for surgery will have the opportunity to be moved from the pre-surgical room to surgery in fun car wagons. Thank you, Mikayla and Eliza, for your generous and thoughtful gift!

Wojan Window & Door Breaks Ground on Charlevoix Factory Expansion

Wojan Window & Door has begun a two-phase expansion project at its Charlevoix, Mich. manufacturing facility. Phase 1 broke ground on July 5th with the infill of two shipping wells and partial demolition of a small parking lot to make way for two above-ground shipping docks. This will allow the company to consolidate all shipping activity at the south end of the building and adds 1,200 square feet of production space. The second part of Phase 1 is a 12,000 square foot addition to the warehouse at the north end of the building. Construction of this addition will begin shortly after the shipping docks are completed.

US-31 and M-66 project in Charlevoix starts Monday with sidewalk ramp upgrades
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will invest $1.7 million to resurface more than 3.5 miles of US-31 and M-66 in Charlevoix from M-66 to Mercer Boulevard on US-31 and from Stover Road to US-31 on M-66. The project includes converting the existing four lanes to three with a center left-turn lane from M-66 to Hurlbut Street and from the bascule bridge north to Mercer Boulevard.

The project also includes upgrading sidewalk ramps in the project limits to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. 

Work on the sidewalk ramps will occur first, with repaving scheduled to begin after Labor Day.
