PARISH NEWS

A CALL TO ACTION FOR THE ARMENIAN QUARTER

Recently, St. John was honored to host Setrag Balian and Hagop Djernazian, two leaders of the Save the ArQ Movement, a community-driven activist effort to protect critical properties in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem from long-term real estate development. They were accompanied by attorney Karnig Kerkonian of Chicago, who is assisting with their litigation in the Israeli courts.

Setrag and Hagop described vividly how for more than 400 days, they and other young Jerusalem Armenians have maintained a 24/7 presence in a tent on the Cow's Garden (Goveroon Bardez), a large plot of land long used by Armenian pilgrims and refugees, and which now serves as a parking lot. Both the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem and this group of lay community members are engaged in separate litigation to block the execution of a real estate contract signed by the patriarchate's former real estate director, which calls for the construction of a seven-star luxury hotel and associated development on land that comprises some 25% of the Armenian Quarter. Such development would threaten the survival of a vibrant Armenian community whose roots in the Holy Land go back more than 1700 years, and too would disrupt the distinct, multi-faith character of the Old City.

The Save the ArQ Movement needs our support to continue their legal efforts. If you are interested in donating to their important cause, please click here. You can also follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

MEMORIES FROM OUR ARMENIAN AMERICAN VETERANS' BUILDING

St. John's Activities Center Programs 1982-83

Since 1963, the Armenian American Veterans' Building has housed the many needs and interests of our community, from bridge classes to basketball games, Senior Lunch to ACYOA meetings, and even as a temporary sanctuary during our recent church renovations. Today, this community gem that has given us so much needs our help.

St. John needs you to join the crowd and support the Armenian American Veterans' Building renovation project, giving for the future to honor our past.

Please click here or on the image below for a brochure with more information on this vital, community-driven project. To give directly, please click here. Your participation and support is greatly appreciated!

UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple

Rescheduled from February 16th due to inclement weather

February 14th was the feast day in the Armenian Church known as Diarnuntarach, the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple. In commemoration of this feast, which falls 40 days after Armenian Christmas, a special blessing for unbaptized children will occur at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy this Sunday, February 23rd.

If you know of any family with unbaptized infants who would like to participate in this brief blessing, please share this information with them.
