Annual Baby Bottle Campaign

Next month, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will launch its annual Baby Bottle Campaign to support Sanctity of Life Ministries and the NOVA Pregnancy Help Centers in Fairfax and Alexandria. They provide free and compassionate care in the form of pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, peer counseling, and parenting classes to women facing unplanned pregnancies. The clear pictures of life on an ultrasound seen in their clinics are a reality check on the life growing in the womb. Their vision is to affirm, "Life in Christ.... Life in the Womb." We will start our Baby Bottle Campaign on February 18th by distributing empty baby bottles in the Narthex. Sign in and take home a bottle, fill it with a check, coins, or cash, and return it by March 18th. Please make checks payable to "Sanctity of Life Ministries." You can also donate independently Online at www.slmgetinvolved.org.

Please help us serve the world through this important life-saving ministry. If you have any questions, please contact Jung Choi (POPLC Outreach Ministry Team) at 240-705-3635.

Concordia Student Concert: Accommodation Request

Mark your calendars and spread the word! A fantastic concert is coming up, and you won't want to miss it. But we need your help. We are seeking volunteers from our church community to provide accommodation for 72 Concordia students for one night after their performance on March 6. Each pair of students will need a place to stay, and you will need to drop them back at the church the following morning. If you are willing and able to assist, please contact us at [email protected] to let us know how many students you can host.

Scout Sunday

Prince of Peace will recognize Scout Sunday on February 4 at our 10:30 service. As you know, PoP charters both Pack 1100 and Troop 1145 and supports scout activities in numerous ways. For those PoP scouts who are in other scout units, please advise Bob Young of your desire to participate and be recognized during the 10:30 service.

Thank You Prince of Peace!

The Prince of Peace staff is blessed to serve in the way we do to further the Kingdom of our Lord and we would like to give thanks to God for the congregation and the special gifts given towards the staff Christmas gift. We pray Prince of Peace will continue to be the special place it is, full of the people that are Christ’s own and the love that is evident.

So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, Will give You thanks forever, We will show forth Your praise to all generations. ~Psalm 79:13

Thank you from Lori Grosz

"My Cup Runneth Over!" My dear Prince of Peace Family,

You have blessed my heart so very many times this past month since my beloved Nick's passing! With your prayers, your beautiful cards and loving notes, your expressions of care, delicious food offerings (just when I needed them!) I have seen and felt God's compassion with each word and hug and bite! For those who could be present at his viewing and service Jan 11-12, thank you for sharing that precious time with our family and me. For those who could not be with us, I hope you'll view it here, and be blessed. Please know how much Nick loved being nourished in Word, Christian fellowship, and (yes) food for 43 years at Prince of Peace, as have I, and shall continue to be. May God's blessings in your lives overflow!

Gratefully, your sister in Christ,

Lori Grosz

Long time POP member "Captain" Harley Stuntz - Serving the World

(by Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Communications)

At White Oaks Elementary School in Burke, one of their most beloved volunteers is a 91-year-old Navy veteran. Captain Harley Stuntz, known to everyone in the building simply as “Captain,” has volunteered at the school for 25 years. Before that, he had a storied career in the Navy, which started when he enrolled in the United States Naval Academy in 1951. Before his retirement in 1978, Stuntz spent 20 years as a Naval Airman, going on six tours in Vietnam.

Looking back on his time serving, Stuntz said, “I enjoyed it. To me, it was an adventure.”

Stuntz recalled when he played a role in an adventure for all humankind. On July 24, 1969, the aircraft carrier USS Hornet recovered the Apollo 11 command module after it splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. Inside the capsule were astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, back on Earth after making history as the first men to land on the Moon.

Stuntz was the retrieval officer aboard the Hornet, stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

“That was exciting,” said Stuntz. “President Nixon came aboard with his entourage and watched the retrieval of the capsule. That was probably the highlight of my career.”

White Oaks Elementary was a brand-new school when Captain began volunteering in a classroom. Today, he’s in the workroom two days a week, running the copy and laminating machines. Stuntz has logged at least 7,500 volunteer hours at White Oaks since he started in 1998, and both the teachers and the students are thankful for every minute of it.

“His dedication to our school is unbelievable,” said Principal Ryan Richardson, “He's a cornerstone here. When he's not here, people notice. And let me tell you, he’s missed very few days in the 10 years I've been here.”
