SED President, Rev. Dr. Bill Harmon, Visits POP!

On Sunday, November 24th, we are honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Bill Harmon as our esteemed guest preacher for both worship services. He will grace us with an enlightening overview of the Southeastern District, sharing insights into its mission, vision, and ministries during our Sunday School hour. We kindly invite all to demonstrate their support by gathering in the Fellowship Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 AM.

Rev. Dr. Bill Harmon is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended Emmanuel Lutheran School and Baltimore Lutheran, now Concordia Preparatory School. He then attended Concordia College, New York, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. President Harmon

earned a Doctor of Ministry degree emphasizing leadership, renewal, and coaching from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

In May of 2022, Pastor Harmon was elected the 14th President of the Southeastern District - LCMS. His focus as President is Immeasurably More. Placing our present and our future in a God who is able to do immeasurably more than we can ever imagine or think (Ephesians 3:20-21).

President Harmon is married to his wife Gayle and they have three sons together.

Hypothermia 2024/25

Prince of Peace will be supporting hypothermia shelter this year December 29 to January 4. For those that may be new to PoP’s involvement here is a quick background. The program is a cooperative effort between FACETS, Fairfax County, and faith community partners. The four shelters in Fairfax County are insufficient to serve the nearly 2000 women and men who are homeless in the County. FACETS has partnered with faith communities and the County to prevent hypothermia through providing overnight shelter during the winter. For each day hosting will begin at approximately 5:00 PM and finish around 7:00 AM the next morning. The week-long effort begins on Sunday evening and extends through to the following Sunday morning. In addition to PoP volunteers, Facets provides on-site staff each evening. The estimated number of guests each evening varies but can be up to 35. Each host church is asked to provide a hot dinner each evening, morning breakfast, and to keep on hand bags for non-perishable items so those guests who do not go to a day center or other program can have a meal. A sign-up for volunteers and food donations will be out by Thanksgiving. Please consider helping us "serve the World"!

Your Vote as a Christian

As Christ’s representatives on earth, we are under a mandate to be “salt and light” in our culture (Mathew 5:13-16). One of the ways we do that is to vote in ways that honor God’s love for all humanity and the betterment of society for all. Our faith in God influences all aspects of our life, and that includes political life. Please vote with prayer and discernment. Pray for the election process and our commonwealth in general.

Making Thanksgiving Truly Festive

Once again ECHO is working to connect clients who would welcome the gift of a Thanksgiving feast with people in our community who would like to donate groceries for a festive meal to a family having a hard time this season. A donor may ask for a specific size of family to assist, and ECHO will match the donor with a local household in need. ECHO will offer a list of foods for the donor to deliver or suggest an amount of grocery store gift cards that can be delivered or mailed. Cards should be mailed to arrive at the recipient’s home by November 24. If you would like to help one or more families have a happy Thanksgiving, contact Fran Eck at franalaneck@msn.com.

ECHO’s Holiday Gifts for Children

The ECHO elves are working to stock the Holiday Gift Shop! ECHO needs donations of new toys (not gift-wrapped, please) for children ages 0-15 for this much-anticipated program. Donations should be made no later than December 6th.  Donations can be chosen from our Amazon wish list and delivered directly to ECHO. Find the list at www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/31K8QEMXDB5SX/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_1, but it may be most easily accessed through our website, www.echo-inc.org/wishlist-on-amazon.  Or donors may deliver gift items directly to our donation door. Popular items are baby dolls, scooters with helmets, soccer balls (sizes 3,4,5), riding toys, and family board games. See a complete list of suggestions at ECHO’s website under the “Donate Goods” tab. ECHO, located at 7205 Old Keene Mill Road, is open on weekday mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00.

Jerry Nepodal's Swimathon for Bethany House

Hi, I’m Jerry Nepodal and once again I’m doing a solo swim-a-thon to raise money for the Bethany House of Northern Virginia on Saturday, 9 November 2024.

Bethany House has been serving our neighbors by providing short-term housing and life advancement services to women and children escaping domestic violence.

There are two types of pledges you can make. One is simply a dollar amount for the entire swim. The second is a "Push Jerry" pledge wherein you pledge an amount/every minute beyond 4 hours.  I will take no breaks and will be swimming a combination of the breast, back, and free style strokes. Last year, I was able to do 6 hours, 10 minutes and we raised just over $10,000.  This year my goal is to swim a minimum of 4 hours, but will push for more with the "right incentive".

Our goal is to raise $25,000. For information on Bethany House of Northern Virginia and how to pledge, go to this website: go.rallyup.com/swimjerry24
