Prince of Peace Scouting Units

Did you know Prince of Peace is home to two Scouting America Units? Scouting America offers opportunities for youth to grow as leaders, learn life skills, serve in our community, be reverent, and so many other things. At PoP, our Scouts have completed Eagle Projects, leaf clean-ups, Oktoberfest logistics, Hyperthermia shelter, and Scout Sunday celebrations.

Our Cub Scout Pack 1100 is open to youth, both boys and girls, from Kindergarten to 5th grade, and our Troop 1145 is open to boys from 6th grade to age 18. Our sister Troop 1176 at the American Legion is open to girls in the 6th grade to age 18.

Upcoming events for our units:

Cub Scout Pack 1100 Invites all K-5th graders to our open house on 15 September at 5 pm here at Prince of Peace. Bridge Building Night is almost here! You and your youth will get a chance to build bridges made from balsa and then test the strength of their bridges. We hope to see you there.

Troop 1145 Invites all boys from the 6th grade to the 18th year old to attend an upcoming meeting. Monday night from 7:00pm to 8:30pm 16 September, 7 or 14 October. You will learn about Camping, First Aid, Wilderness Survival, Citizenship, Fun Games, and Scouting.

Troop 1176 invites all girls from 6th grade to age 18 to join a meeting any Monday night from 7:30 to 8:45 at Sydenstricker Methodist Church.

If you have any questions about Scouting, feel free to contact Marjorie McDonald at mm00mjbm@gmail.com.

Please stop by the Scout booth at Prince of Peace's upcoming Octoberfest!

Seeking Eyeglass Donations for Local DMV Neighbors

POP Member Elizabeth Grove, age 7, is working on a service project for her American Heritage Girls (AHG) troop, VA 0683. AHG is a Christian-based leadership development program for girls K-12 that has been supported by the LCMS church since 2014. This year’s national theme is “Vision.” “I pray that the EYES of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in His holy people,” (Ephesians 1:18, NIV).

In support of this theme, Elizabeth’s troop is conducting an eyeglass collection drive. Glasses will be cleaned and donated to those in need in the DMV area. If you have old eyeglasses you are looking to part ways with, then please drop them in the marked box in the narthex Sunday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 22. Collections of prescription glasses and non-prescription readers for kids and adults are welcomed, but please, no sunglasses. You can also donate eyeglass cases. Jennifer Grove

Writing Your Memoirs

Ever thought of leaving your life with your family? What a legacy!

Too often memories die with their owner, and too often time runs out without sharing those memories. Your life is packed with memories and stories of your past. Does your family know about them? Put those stories into a series of writings that can be a legacy for them.

Each week we'll have a short writing prompt for you. These writings will eventually create a record of your life and will also express who you are as a person. It will be a way to share how God made you who you are today! You will be surprised at how getting together with other people to write your story will trigger your mind on things of your past that you want to put on paper...how certain words can transport you back in time. Be your own inner storyteller and join this class. Classes will meet weekly on Mondays, 7-9pm, in room 24, until the end of May.

The total cost for the year is $10 for class materials. To register, please email Arla Albers and mention "MEMOIRS" in the subject line.

Women's Ministry

WOW Wednesday Mornings

Starts Wednesday, September 18, at 9:30am in the Fellowship Hall .

Grow Together with Women of the Word (WoW) Wednesday mornings! Our fall kickoff is September 18 at 9:30 am. Gather in the Fellowship Hall for singing, fellowship, and an introduction to our two NEW study groups for fall!

Yvette Moy will be our featured speaker for the morning!

We have two new studies for fall!

Michelle Schiffner and Christy Brown will lead "Seamless: Understanding the Bible as One Complete Story" by Angie Smith. This video-based study covers the people, places, and promises of the Bible, tying them together into the greater story of Scripture. Experience the Bible as a whole as you gain clarity and confidence in your understanding of Scripture!

Jennifer Gross will lead "The Spirituality of the Cross: The Way of the First Evangelicals," by Gene Edward Veith, Jr. As a young man, the author explored many kinds of spirituality--including Buddhism--and then found what he was looking for in the faith of Lutheran Christians. If it's been a while since Confirmation or if you didn't grow up in a Lutheran context, this study will deepen your understanding of God's grace and ground you in the beauty of Lutheran spirituality.
