Faith Shapers Book Discussion Group

Thursday, October 10 at 7:00 pm on Zoom

Join women from around the country to discuss Faith-Shapers' October read, "Sent: Living a Life That Invites Others to Jesus" by Heather Holleman and Ashley Holleman on Zoom. The book invites us to grow joyfully with Jesus as we live out our true identity as sent to share Jesus with others.

If you can't join us this month, make plans to join us on Nov. 14, when we'll discuss "The Understory: An Invitation to Rootedness and Resilience from the Forest Floor" by Lore Ferguson Wilbert. Among the understory of the forest, the author discovers rich metaphors for living a rooted and flourishing life within the complex ecosystems of our world. Her tenderness and honesty will help readers grieve, remember, hope, and press on with resilience.

For more information and the Zoom link, email Jennifer Gross.

New Sunday Morning

Women's Bible Study Starting

Come out and join us Sundays, 9:15 - 10:15 am, Room 24, in discussing James K. A. Smith's book "You Are What You Love". In this book, award-winning author James K. A. Smith shows that who and what we worship fundamentally shape our hearts. And while we desire to shape culture, we are not often aware of how culture shapes us. We might not realize the ways our hearts are being taught to love rival gods instead of the One for whom we were made.

Smith helps readers recognize the formative power of culture and the transformative possibilities of Christian practices. He explains that worship is the "imagination station" that incubates our loves and longings so that our cultural endeavors are indexed toward God and his kingdom. This is why the church and worshiping in a local community of believers should be the hub and heart of Christian formation and discipleship.

Please note that we will pause our book discussion to participate in the Grow Together study, starting on October 13th. Once the 6 week study is finished, we will resume our book discussion on Sunday, November 24th.

Jerry Nepodal's Swimathon for Bethany House

Hi, I’m Jerry Nepodal and once again I’m doing a solo swim-a-thon to raise money for the Bethany House of Northern Virginia on Saturday, 9 November 2024.

Bethany House has been serving our neighbors by providing short-term housing and life advancement services to women and children escaping domestic violence.

There are two types of pledges you can make. One is simply a dollar amount for the entire swim. The second is a "Push Jerry" pledge wherein you pledge an amount/every minute beyond 4 hours.  I will take no breaks and will be swimming a combination of the breast, back, and free style strokes. Last year, I was able to do 6 hours, 10 minutes and we raised just over $10,000.  This year my goal is to swim a minimum of 4 hours, but will push for more with the "right incentive".

Our goal is to raise $25,000. For information on Bethany House of Northern Virginia and how to pledge, go to this website: go.rallyup.com/swimjerry24

Writing Your Memoirs

Ever thought of leaving your life with your family? What a legacy!

Too often memories die with their owner, and too often time runs out without sharing those memories. Your life is packed with memories and stories of your past. Does your family know about them? Put those stories into a series of writings that can be a legacy for them.

Each week we'll have a short writing prompt for you. These writings will eventually create a record of your life and will also express who you are as a person. It will be a way to share how God made you who you are today! You will be surprised at how getting together with other people to write your story will trigger your mind on things of your past that you want to put on paper...how certain words can transport you back in time. Be your own inner storyteller and join this class. Classes will meet weekly on Mondays, 7-9pm, in room 24, until the end of May.

The total cost for the year is $10 for class materials. To register, please email Arla Albers and mention "MEMOIRS" in the subject line.
