Community Sharing for May

Our Community Sharing partner this month is Alliance for Fair Food. The Alliance for Fair Food (AFF) is the vibrant, diverse ally network of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), the internationally-acclaimed farmworker organization transforming human rights in the U.S. agricultural industry. The principal focus of the Alliance for Fair Food is the Campaign for Fair Food, a farmworker-led, community-powered movement that successfully holds major food retailers accountable to the highest human rights standards in their produce supply chains.

If you cannot attend in person, you can still donate by mailing a check to the office with "community sharing" in the subject line, or by using the "donate" button on the website and marking it "community sharing".

Lee County Banned Books

What do I do?

  1. Come to our table in Hobart Hall Sunday May 14 (or subsequent Sundays) and select a title from the list of 30 Lee County banned or threatened books.
  2. You will get an envelope, which includes a donation sticker to place inside the front cover with your name and a card pocket to affix to the inside back cover, and a sheet with the book’s name and some questions
  3. Go home and find a way to purchase that book. Then read it and comment on it. Many of these books are for kids, but there are also several works targeted for adults. Take your pick.
  4. Bring the book back to our table for circulation, along with the sheet (included in your envelope) where you give your assessment of the book
  5. Borrow another book.

How can We be Supporters and Advocates for Transpeople in Florida?

via Zoom, Saturday, May 20, at 1:00 pm

The Sunshine Cluster prepared months ago for a Legislative Follow-up program. Equality Florida staff will discuss transgender life through trans eyes, offer a legislative update and address protections and issues currently facing LGBTQ+ and trans youth.

All are welcome to attend this free program by the Sunshine Cluster (formerly the SE Florida UU Cluster). To register, email  seuucluster@gmail.com for Zoom link. The two speakers from Equality Florida are Nikole Parker, Director of Transgender Equality and Geanny Joseph Ruiz, Statewide Safe and Healthy Schools Manager.

In case you have been traveling and missed news coverage of the trans discussion at the Capitol, link here to a Human Rights Campaign discussion held recently in Tallahassee.

Volunteers Needed!

Would you like to help out with counting the offering after the service on Sunday mornings? It takes about 15 minutes, training is provided, and you can tell us how often you’d like to volunteer. Please contact Pati Maier if you’re interested. Thank you!

HELD – Showing Up for Each Other’s Mental Health

In this first worship service produced by the UU Mental Health Network Speaker’s Bureau, the Rev. Barbara F. Meyers will talk about her book HELD which tells a lot of stories from her ministry focused on mental health issues - both how-to stories and how-not-to stories and gives guidance for congregants in the pews who want to help make a difference. It has a built-in study guide. We hope that the book will be used by many congregations and help to make the denomination a friendlier place to people with mental health problems and their families.
