A Great Time for Charitable Giving! One of the Covid stimulus measures allows taxpayers to contribute up to $300 to a qualified charity and receive a tax donation, even if you don’t itemize your taxes! This is a great reason to be generous during the Greater Good campaign, to increase your annual pledge to the church, or to make a one-time donation to the endowment. Depending on your tax bracket, this is like having the government kick in an extra boost to your giving, but you must act before December 31st to take advantage of this temporary measure. If you are taking Required Minimum Distributions from your retirement accounts, did you know you don’t have to take them in 2020? This is another Covid stimulus measure. If you are over age 70, you can still use your IRAs to make charitable donations, and it will all be tax deductible! If you act before December 31, you can even convert RMDs from the past 60 days to charitable contributions, and pay no taxes on this amount. Not all of us are in a position to give, but if you are please consider using this extra stimulus to support the church and the Greater Good campaign. Annie McQuilken, from First Unitarian’s Investment Committee is happy to help you take advantage of these tax breaks.
