HOLIDAY GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

City employees are invited to sign up for a slot as we support the Salvation Army's bell-ringing campaign from 4-8 p.m. on Nov. 28-Dec. 1.  It's always a rewarding way to connect to the holiday spirit and help our community. Since your families are welcome to join you, it's also an excellent opportunity for kids needing community service hours.  Registration is on a first-come basis. Click the link below to reserve your day and time:

SOSA RECEIVES STATE AWARD

Municipal Court Customer Service Coordinator Cynthia Sosa received the Texas Court Clerks Association's Distinguished Service Award last week at the Golden Jubilee Conference in San Marcos. She has been with the court since 2016. The award recognizes a non-judicial service, program, task, or endeavor in a court profession that benefits the membership by showing dedication and commitment.

Cynthia, a Level II certified clerk, played a huge role in implementing INCODE, a new court software in FY 22. She worked hundreds of hours as a project team member in addition to fulfilling her regular role as the court's customer service coordinator. Cynthia's dedication and expertise are tremendous assets to the Municipal Court.

She also played a significant role in establishing a virtual court in only 24 hours in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, she worked with Judge Spillane and City Prosecutor Gavin Midgley to ensure appropriate guardrails were set for any virtual activity. Because of her exemplary work, the city has continued the virtual court proceedings and invested in software to make them as effective as possible.

RESIDENT PRAISES WATER CREW

A resident on Bandon Dunes called this week to express her gratitude for a pleasant experience she had recently with water distribution and wastewater collection operators Lanny Nowak and Frederick Robinson. After she reported a high water bill, Lanny and Frederick went to her home and identified a customer-side leak in her irrigation system.

The leak would have been challenging to find by an untrained person, and the resident said, "these two gentlemen were sharp, professional, and extremely polite. Even though it ended up being my problem, they were just amazing!"

Lanny and Frederick are seasoned Water Services veterans and are genuine assets to the organization. The incident is just another example of the excellent work these folks do every day. Thank you, Lanny and Frederick, for a job well done!

MORE LOVE FOR BRUSH CREW

We received the following email on Thursday:

After I read about the Durrand Street residents praising the great job the Solid Waste brush crew did on their street last week, I wanted to add my thanks for the outstanding job they recently did on Lodgepole Street. Christ Methodist Church had a volunteer work event on Sunday, Nov. 6, and my work group repaired fences and cut down a good-sized oak tree that was growing into the fascia board of a homeowner who has cancer and couldn't afford the needed repairs.

Our group worked from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at her home that day. I returned the following expecting to clean up broken twigs and leaves that the brush crew couldn't grab with the equipment during its Wednesday pickup. To my absolute amazement, nothing needed to be cleaned up. The brush crew had left the location of our enormous brush pile immaculately clean. I'm so appreciative of the job they did and so proud to be a part of such a great team that puts in extra effort for our citizens and each other. Please pass along my thanks to that awesome crew!!!

CSPD HELPS BOX 500 MEALS

The College Station Fire Department joined the Rotary Club of Aggieland, Texas A&M's Corps of Cadets, and other community volunteers to box and deliver 500 Thanksgiving meal boxes to Brazos County residents on Friday.

The A&M Church of Christ opened its facility to create an assembly line for Thanksgiving baskets. Firefighters from Station No. 2 and Fire Chief Richard Mann's command staff assisted with packing up veggies, dry goods, and turkeys.

FUN FACT

Dunce caps used to be signs of intelligence.

Thirteenth-century philosopher John Duns Scotus believed a pointed cap would help spread knowledge from the tip to the brain, and his "Dunsmen" followers wore them as a badge of honor. In the 1500s, his ideas became less popular, and the meaning of the Duns cap was turned on its head, becoming something of a joke.
