“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night” – Psalm 92:1-2
A prayer of thanksgiving –
For the surprising, spontaneous call from an old friend… For the all too brief blur of color as the fleeing bluebird or goldfinch is spied out of the corner of our eye… For the irony and pride of pleasing soreness and exhaustion after the workout… For that most blessed gift to not take ourselves too seriously… For the sensational fusion of flavors as a sip of milkshake washes over the bite of a cheeseburger about to be swallowed… For the eruption of shared and surprised joy when a friend recognizes us in a crowded marketplace… For the call from the child without an agenda… For the hours that passed by so quickly as we were consumed in a conversation … or a book … or maybe even a task connected to the vocation we love… For the alleviation of our own suffering that accompanies the blessed distraction of seeking to relieve the suffering of another… For the space that grants the perspective to admit that the wound was not so deep, the insult not so soul-crushing, the slight not so cataclysmic for us… For the simple joy of refuge under a thick blanket on a cold night… For the periodic visit of humility when reminded that the world doesn’t revolve around us… For a toddler’s laughter, the fuzz on the ridge of an infant’s ear, the confused bloom of an azalea out of season, the exhilaration of a job done, the silence of the clock when morning commands no alarms… For the love of a Lord who refuses to let us go… we give Thee thanks, O Lord. Grace doesn’t happen because we grasp it. Grace happens because You give it. May our eyes be open to perceive it and our hearts be open to rejoice in it. May the grace of Jesus Christ, Your Son, be our light today and always. Amen.
