Evensong

5 pm, In the Cathedral

Please join us for Choral Evensong on the Feast of Visitation, an evening service shaped by themes of grace, mercy, and quiet devotion.

The service begins with Bogoroditse Devo by Alfred Schnittke, a radiant setting of the Orthodox prayer to the Virgin Mary that opens the liturgy with warmth and reverence. The Responses by John Barnard and Psalm 132 continue this spirit of prayer and blessing, while the Canticles in E-flat by Charles Wood bring richness and dignity to the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis.

At the heart of the service is Ave Maria by Anton Bruckner, a luminous and deeply expressive setting of the beloved Marian text. Framed by hymns of gentleness and invocation, the service concludes in a spirit of peace, contemplation, and hope.

Choral Evensong will be sung by the Cathedral Schola, with Michael Lawrence, organist, under the direction of Seonjeong Park. All are warmly invited.

Online Summer Course on the Nicene Creed … for Smarties!  Taught by Dr. David Moseley

Class begins Monday, June 8, on Zoom

The Church just celebrated a Big Birthday last year ― the Nicene Creed, promulgated in 325 C.E., is 1,700+1 Years Young!  Weekly, Christians around the world ― including Episcopalians ― recite the words of the Nicene Creed, and these affirmations form the foundational doctrines of Christianity. But what do these ancient articles of faith mean? Do we really know What we’re saying? And do we Mean what we say?

Please join us as we examine the background to the Nicene Council; the great arguments and controversies about doctrine and belief that split the early church, especially Christology and the Holy Trinity; and the personalities of the combatants at the heart of the debate ― Roman Emperor Constantine, the arch-heretic Arius ... and Athanasius, the champion of orthodoxy. We will also examine the need for the Creed today and identify some of the same old heresies dressed up in brand new clothes.

All classes meet weekly on Mondays via Zoom, 6 – 8 pm, starting June 8. Classes are recorded and can be accessed if you miss. Click here to view the Syllabus.

Please email Dr. David Moseley (drdavidmoseley@gmail.com) to sign up, or for questions regarding scholarships.

Sacred Ground in Action Initiative:

Protecting Indigenous Land

This past March 13 the legal struggle for the transfer of Chi'chil Bildagoteel ended with the 9th Circuit Court s denial of an Apache Stronghold appeal to prevent land transfer to mega mine developer Resolution Copper. While the current transfer of this sacred site to the San Carlos Apache and other communities will certainly create environmental devastation to the land, there is still time to protect the area adjacent to the proposed development. Rep. Adelita Grijalva’s bill, HR 7957, will work to "prevent mining related activities and infrastructure on public lands."

Please contact your representative (Click Here) to cosponsor and support HR 7957, a bill to protect public lands in the Chi’Chil Bildagotell Historic District in Arizona.
