Warriors of the Week
Each week through this year we will recognize several of our students through our "Warrior of the Week" award. Students receive this award for displaying effort that goes above-and-beyond our expectations - reflecting their drive to achieve personal and academic growth.

This week's Warriors of the Week are:

Nicole L.
Nikki has been an exemplary employee at the Warrior Coffee Company! She is an incredibly hard worker and greets every customer with a smile!

Regan B.
Regan has been working really hard in all of her classes. She is always very respectful and polite. Her creativity shines in her project work. Keep up the good work!

Owen M.
Owen is a phenomenal student who puts in the effort and excels both in the classroom and with his extracurricular activities. He challenges himself to go the extra mile and strives for excellence. He is intuitive, respectful, thought-provoking, and has a great sense of humor. Owen is a team player and kindly facilitates group work, while holding others accountable. He has a way to help his classmates reach their full potential. We are looking forward to seeing him shine as an 8th grader and will miss him greatly next year!

Hira A.
Hira came to us as a new student in February. Even though she may not be the most vocal in class, she has been working her way through the PLP and her assignments in record time. Her writing is extraordinary and it really shows off her personality. We really appreciate her effort and diligence in making a path for herself here at LFM.

Attention Students and Parents / Guardians:

Lewis F. Mayer Middle School is hosting a fundraising event for St. Baldrick's - Warriors SHAVE the Day - on Monday, May 20 from 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM in the MS gym.

If you, your child, or someone else would like to participate in the event and have their head shaved to support St. Baldrick's, you can register by visiting our event page and clicking on the blue "Join Us" button. Once registered, you will have your own personal fundraising page, where donations can be made online via credit card. Donations can also be made by printing the donation form . Shavees can collect the forms with cash or checks made out to St. Baldrick's Foundation and submit them to the MS office up until the day of the event. We suggest a minimum of a $25 donation per participant in order to get their head shaved. If participants raise at least $50, they will be given a t-shirt from St. Baldrick's.

If a student wishes to participate, a permission slip  will need to be signed, dated and returned. The permission slip acknowledges that your child will be participating in the event by shaving their head and doing the associated fundraising.

If you'd like to come and watch your child get their head shaved, you are welcome to do so!

This is a FUNDRAISER and we will be welcoming donations, even if you're not donating to support someone shaving their head. Help us make this event successful, supporting St. Baldrick's in their mission to fund childhood cancer research grants!
5th to 6th Grade Transition
The 5th grade class from Gilles-Sweet visited us at the MS last week. They had a tour of the school, a quick activity in the gym, and attended a presentation about the transition. We're so excited to have them here at LFM!
Habits of Success
Habits of Success are the social and emotional skills that enable students to be successful at both academic and non-academic pursuits. This is the framework we use in our teaching / mentoring with students.  In the coming weeks, we will highlight examples of each of these components so that families can promote similar habits at home.
Purpose is the dynamic notion of the self as belonging to and responsible for a community or communities.

Our staff and students will lean on each other for support when needed. There is a strong bond between staff, students, and parents at the Middle School. This purpose of belonging in our community has invoked the need to help colleagues and students recover from illness, tragedy, or even loss of property this year. I have seen drives, collections, meal trains, and many other acts of kindness that have positively impacted our community and school. Students have stayed after class to clean up, organize, and help teachers in various ways. Some students even showed up and helped staff during moving day, when there was no school. I have witnessed teachers who give our students their all everyday, with the goal of maximizing each students' potential. I have seen staff come  to school while feeling a little under the weather, and others who will make themselves available for help during planning or even after school.

Hi Fairview Park Families!

We are hearing all kinds of big hype over smartphones and addiction to our phones. Here are two articles that have some interesting information about this topic.

2) Last Friday, Diane Sawyer had a two hour special about Screen Time.  If you missed it, here is a little clipĂ‚I found about it.  Try to see if you can find it on your on-demand to see it the whole episode!

I would love to hear back from any families that do the #screen time challenge!  They showed a family that did that and their response after was great! They say they learned to talk more and spend time doing things together!  For instance, they have a house rule: No screens from 6-7pm everyday.  What a great idea! I know when I was raising my sons, the house rule was only an hour a day of gaming.  They never really fought me about it....they learned to choose their time well as well as other activities!

As I am finishing up the school year, I am already planning for next year.  PLEASE let me know if you have any ideas of topics you would like to see me cover in the Parent Universities and/or for our students K-12. Thank you!
