Warrior of the Month
Bailey B.

Bailey has done a great job all year. She has a wonderful spirit, is kind to all, and is a sensitive soul. I appreciate her shy smile and great sense of humor.

Bailey is a pleasure to have in class! Creative, insightful and quietly humorous, she works well with peers and adults alike. Although seemingly shy, Bailey has fantastic ideas and enjoys working in groups, especially with other creative types! I see great things in Bailey's future!!

Habits of Success
Habits of Success are the social and emotional skills that enable students to be successful at both academic and non-academic pursuits. This is the framework we use in our teaching / mentoring with students.  In the coming weeks, we will highlight examples of each of these components so that families can promote similar habits at home.
This week we'll focus on CURIOSITY . Curiosity is the desire to engage and understand the world, interest in a wide variety of things and preference for a complete understanding of a complex topic or problem.

Here at Mayer Middle School, we want to foster each student's inquisitiveness whenever possible, and allowing for student choice is one of the best ways to capture a student's curiosity.   From allowing students to choose their own topics to research, to encouraging creativity in conveying and presenting information, to allowing students the freedom to read independently based on their own interests , our desire is that each student finds his or her own voice through authentic experiences that fan the flames of curiosity to truly instill the value of life-long learning in every student.

Personalized Learning Platform
The school year is nearly over! As a reminder, there is no summer school this year, so students must complete their work by the end of the 4th quarter. The last day of school is Thursday, May 23.

Happy May Fairview Park families!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and I hope your family, especially the middle and high school students have learned two important things from the activities we have been doing all year:
1) To have an adult in your life to go to when you need someone to talk to!!! (parent, family member, teacher, coach, etc).
2) Two techniques you can do to calm yourself when you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, sad, nervous, etc!

This is a great link from NAMI discussing digital usage and teen depression.
I love the last paragraph regarding teen sleep and taking device away so the brain can relax!
I would highly suggest to parents to put a time limit every night...say 9 or 10 pm (depending on their age), that the phone is in your hands til the morning.

PLEASE check out the FACE website for resources about:
summer camps
mental health resources
transition information.....and so much more!!

As always, please call or email me if you have any questions, concerns or any ideas of some topics you would like me to present this summer or next school year!
