Week of April 15, 2019
Warriors of the Week
Each week through this year we will recognize several of our students through our "Warrior of the Week" award. Students receive this award for displaying effort that goes above-and-beyond our expectations - reflecting their drive to achieve personal and academic growth.

This week's Warriors of the Week are:

6th
Lily T.
Lily is a super helpful 6th grader that will drop everything to help a student in need. In Science class, Lily has been our technology expert for the week, often stopping to help other groups troubleshoot technology issues. She also helped other students in her testing group that didn't bring their own materials to work on when testing was over. Lily had brought extra coloring supplies and didn't hesitate to share with her peers. She has been working hard in all of her classes! Keep up the good work Lily!

7th
Andrew H.
Andrew is active in extracurricular activities such as Builder's Club, Stagecrafters and Math Club. He is determined to grow both as a student and member of the community as well. Andrew is very inquisitive in his classwork and goes above and beyond on his final products. He always has a positive attitude and a smile on his face. The joy he brings to Mayer Middle School is contagious.

8th
Josie J.
Josie knows when to add her spin on classroom activities and when to buckle down. We enjoy her enthusiasm, her helpful nature, and her spunky drive. What a great student to represent the Warrior of the Week!

In order to prepare your student(s) for the upcoming standardized tests, it is important that they begin their studies early. To help them prepare, families can access Student Tutorials and Tools , where each type of question on the OST is broken down in video tutorials.

Student Practice Resources
Science (8th Graders only!)

Students can also access the Students Practice Site to familiarize themselves with the format of the assessment.  They will log in with their first name and their student ID (they use this for lunch).

During testing students are encouraged to bring a non-graphing calculator for their AIR math assessment. These calculators are allowed to be used on both parts 1 and 2 for 8th graders (Math 8, EOC Math 8 and Advanced Geometry). Students in 6th and 7th grade are allowed the usage of calculators on part 2. The TI30 is the recommended calculator that students have been using all school year. They can be purchased on Amazon HERE . If unable to purchase a calculator, there is an online calculator that can be used: https://www.desmos.com/fourfunction .

Habits of Success
Habits of Success are the social and emotional skills that enable students to be successful at both academic and non-academic pursuits. This is the framework we use in our teaching / mentoring with students. In the coming weeks, we will highlight examples of each of these components so that families can promote similar habits at home.
SENSE OF BELONGING  and  RELEVANCE OF SCHOOL

Sense of Belonging is a sense that one has a rightful place in a given academic setting and can claim full membership in a classroom community.

Relevance of School is a student's sense that the subject matter he or she is studying is interesting and holds value.

SENSE OF BELONGING and RELEVANCE OF SCHOOL at LEWIS F. MAYER MIDDLE SCHOOL:

We strive to empower our students to maximize their own potential and merit their individual contributions to classrooms and the wider community.  We are advocates of inclusion for our special education students, and provide opportunity to stretch and challenge all learners in all classrooms.

Educators at Lewis F. Mayer construct intentional learning experiences that are tied to engaging, real-world applications of the subject content.  There is a continued presence of college and career pathways to further demonstrate the importance of the work going on in the classroom.

The month of April is Stress Awareness Month. We started our month off with a great presentation from Jessie Funk and workshops for students to learn different ways to help them deal with their stress!

Did your child tell you about it? Ask them to explain the chocolate sauce and windex. Ask them to explain two ways they are de-stressing.  (Check out the FACE page of resources if you want some more information on this topic).

I also want to share an article on Social Media Impacting your Mental Health.  It is really a hot topic and something parents need to monitor for their children.

As the school year is coming to a close and the weather is improving, please make sure students are doing their school work completed! Have a great week!
