Warriors of the Week
Each week through this year we will recognize several of our students through our "Warrior of the Week" award. Students receive this award for displaying effort that goes above-and-beyond our expectations - reflecting their drive to achieve personal and academic growth.

This week's Warriors of the Week are:

6th
Lauren W.
Lauren has stepped up big time to help other struggling kids in art, and has shown nothing but diligence and enthusiasm for the class. Lauren is very quiet, but works really hard to make sure she is doing what she needs to. Keep up the good work!

Lilian J.
Lilian has really stepped it up lately with her work. She has been more focused and concerned with getting her work done and doing the right thing. She has been more attentive in class and participating more. She even jumped in to help a student write when they were unable due to an injury. Her kindness is amazing!

7th
Mallory A.
Mallory is an exemplary student who always puts in 110% of her effort into her academic work. She is self-motivated and has a keen love of learning. Mallory is kind, thoughtful, collaborates well with others, and has a great sense of humor. The 7th grade team is very proud of Mallory, and we are looking forward to seeing her progress the rest of the year! Fantastic work Mallory!

8th
Joey W.
Joey W. is a fun-loving student who energetically engages in his classes. He enthusiastically participates in class discussions, group projects and most recently a Constitutional Simulation where he took on the role of Luther Martin from Maryland! When his Language Art class volunteered at the book bank, Joey jumped right in and loaded books to help needy kids. In all his subjects, Joe is prepared, engaged and in many, ahead of the game.
From the Office
Remember that there will be NO SUMMER SCHOOL this summer. Students will need to complete all their work by the end of the 4th quarter. The last day of school is May 23, 2019.

Please send in your pull tabs from soda and soup cans - we are collecting them for Ronald McDonald House - they will use the funds raised for families staying at the House while their child(ren) is in the hospital.

Call for BOX TOPS! Please cut out and send in your Box Tops! It's an easy fundraiser for the school. Turn them in to Mrs. Ristagno in the Middle School office!

Power of the Pen Tournament
On February 2, fifteen Mayer Middle School 7 th and 8 th graders participated in the Northern District Power of the Pen Tournament at Columbia Middle School. Twenty-one schools participated in the tournament, with 100 students writing in the 7 th grade and 112 students writing in the 8 th grade. The Writing Warriors were very successful at the tournament.

The 7 th grade team placed 6 th place out of the 21 schools. Nola F. (#17) and Maggie R. (#18) placed in the top 20 of the 7 th grade division. Ella J. and Addison L. will be joining Nola and Maggie as Regional qualifiers. Ashley S. and Jenna S. also wrote highly scored stories to help the 7 th grade team.

The 8 th grade team also had an phenomenal showing at the district tournament. All started by Kelli W. being recognized in front of the packed gym for her 7 th place finish and she will advance to the Regional Tournament. June P., Olivia H., and Nina J. also qualified for the Regional Tournament. Eva K. and Allison K. had a very strong showing and wrote some very inspirational stories.

After the tournament, all of the top rated stories were read for Best of Round and Director's Choice awards, which honor the highest quality student writing. Lewis F. Mayer students took the honors 2 of the 3 rounds. 8 th grader June P. won the honors for round one with her story "Paris" while 7 th grader Maggie R. received the round two honors with her story "The True Meaning of Halloween."

The writing team will be in action again February 23 rd when they travel to Shaker Heights Middle School for the PenOhio District Tournament. The Power of the Pen Northern Region Tournament will take place on Saturday, April 6, at Villa Angela St. Joseph High School at 18491 Lakeshore Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44119. The regional tournament runs on a similar schedule as the district tournament.
Book Bank Field Trip
The 8th Grade Advanced ELA class took a trip to the Cleveland Book Bank on Tuesday, February 5, and spent several hours volunteering. They sorted, packed, taped and moved boxes to donate to needy schools. The kids did such an amazing job! They had 3,000 books packed in under 30 minutes!
Testing
6th Grade Math - MAP testing on Tuesday, 2/12 and Wednesday, 2/13.
7th Grade ELA - MAP testing on Tuesday, 2/12 and Wednesday, 2/13.

We are hoping as a building to increase our scores by leaps and bounds!  We would like you to let all of you students know prior to the assessment that we will be purchasing ice cream for any student who increases BOTH scores in reading and math since the Fall administration of the test - they can have one for EACH subject. The date that ice cream will be handed out is still TBD; it will be shortly after all students have taken the assessments.

Junior Achievement Field Day
On April 25th, we have the opportunity to send 46 of our 6-8th grade students to Junior Achievement's Field Day. The event takes place at Cleveland Public Hall. Departure from school would be at 8:30am with a 2pm return. Places for this trip will be offered on a first come first served basis to those who return the permission slip to Mrs. Ristagno in the middle school office. A "standby" list will be created in the event that there are drop-outs or students who are absent on that day - again, this will be in order of permission slips received and parents would be notified before standby students leave school. Permission slips will be distributed in mentoring on Wednesday next week (2/13).

Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District
The District offers recycling contests and prizes throughout the school year. Teachers, educators and youth leaders are encouraged to participate.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Photo Contest
What does reduce, reuse, recycle mean to you? This annual contest is designed to capture what the theme Reduce, Reuse, Recycle means to a student in either a photograph or a drawing. A photograph or drawing might tell how the student has repurposed an object so it could be used again, illustrate how the student reduces waste or shows how the student recycles at home, at school or in their community. Cuyahoga County K-12 grade students or those attending school in Cuyahoga County are eligible for prizes.
