Week of April 8, 2019
Warriors of the Week
Each week through this year we will recognize several of our students through our "Warrior of the Week" award. Students receive this award for displaying effort that goes above-and-beyond our expectations - reflecting their drive to achieve personal and academic growth.

This week's Warriors of the Week are:

6th
Ethan S.
Ethan has been showing great work ethic over the past few weeks, passing multiple focus areas and even completing a few projects. He has been consistently showing up to office hours, which shows that he is willing to put extra time into getting his work done. Also, fun fact, he won the MS yearbook cover design as well! Great job Ethan!

7th
Rebecca C.
Rebecca is hardworking, dedicated, and always quick with a smile and offer of assistance. Her enthusiasm for learning is evident throughout her classes. You can often see her working hard outside of class as well, as a member of the volleyball, basketball and softball teams. Rebecca is truly an all-star student and is an important member of our 7th grade community.

8th

Matthew W.
Matthew has such a nice demeanor and great attitude. He always tries his very best on all assignments.

Alex H.
Alex is focused on learning, participates in class discussions, and is always polite and respectful. Alex is also very kind, and he demonstrates empathy and maturity in working with his peers. We recognize his extra effort and we are impressed by his growth this year. Way to go Alex!
Student Shout-Out
We want to give one of our students, Ryan G., a special shout-out! He donated his hair, after letting it grow for about a year and a half, to Wigs for Kids. He did so to honor his late Aunt Sharon's legacy, who during her last days, encouraged their family to donate.

Habits of Success
Habits of Success are the social and emotional skills that enable students to be successful at both academic and non-academic pursuits. This is the framework we use in our teaching / mentoring with students. In the coming weeks, we will highlight examples of each of these components so that families can promote similar habits at home.
This week we'll look at GROWTH MINDSET  and SELF-EFFICACY.

Growth Mindset can be defined as the belief that intelligence is not fixed and can be developed by taking risks, persistence and hard-work.

Self-Efficacy is the perception that one can do something successfully.

GROWTH MINDSET and SELF-EFFICACY at LEWIS F. MAYER MIDDLE SCHOOL:

We believe students should be rewarded by the process, not the outcome. If they fail and get a negative response, they may never challenge themselves. We encourage them to try and try again, until they understand and succeed. Our goal is to build their confidence, understand that failure is a part of life, but that we can learn from our failures and continue to grow.

GiGi's Playhouse is a one-of-a-kind achievement center for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the community.
