'Didn't I see him showing up at the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica for Easter blessing?' He seemed frail, yet we did not expect to hear of his passing on the next day. Monday morning, I was busy cooking a nice breakfast for my husband as he was about to leave home for a few days to attend a conference. But my ears were tuned to the TV. When I returned home after dropping him off at O'Hare, I checked several sites to catch up with more news about him. I read and watched about his life and ministry all week, as more memories of him circulated in the media.
I don't know about you, but I hardly felt friendly toward any figures in the papacy before Pope Francis. His predecessors always seemed to be highly elevated in authority and power. But he always seemed to reach out to the poor and weak, suffering and lowly. He wore a simple white cossack, a metal cross, and worn shoes. He lived in the papal apartments with his colleagues and used a simple car. After being elected as Pope, he washed the feet of a woman and a prisoner at his first Maundy Thursday Mass. He emphasized the boundless love of God for everyone, whether the person is a refugee, gay, or an atheist.
It was touching to hear that Pope Francis called the Holy Family Church in Gaza - the only Catholic parish in the besieged territory - every evening since the beginning of the war, eighteen months ago. He yearned for peace and visited the places in conflict. In his final address, which was recited, Pope Francis appealed to the warring parties to call a ceasefire and come to the aid of the starving people. He urged the political leaders "to use the resources available to help the needy, fight hunger, and encourage development initiatives [which] are the 'weapons' of peace: weapons that build the future, instead of sowing seeds of death!"

Ryan's Case for Smiles is a national volunteer organization that provides handmade whimsical pillowcases for children to help them cope with the stress of their illnesses and injuries. Cindy Kerr began making pillowcases for her son Ryan to brighten up his hospital room and put a smile on his face. Although Ryan is no longer with us physically, his legacy lives on in Ryan's Case for Smiles. There are over 100 chapters in the United States & Canada and over two million pillowcases have been delivered.
A new Western Suburbs chapter (Kane Co & McHenry Co, IL) has recently been established. We will be delivering bright, fun pillowcases to Ascension St. Alexius Women & Children's Hospital in Hoffman Estates, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, and Lurie Children's at Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley. The Ryan's pillowcase pattern is available at: caseforsmiles.org
|
If you would like to volunteer to sew a pillowcase, your pillowcases can be given to Jean J. at church on Sundays.
If you would like more information, please contact:
Jean Jaderborg, RCFS Western Suburbs Chapter Coordinator. Thank you!

If you would like to keep your prayer request in beyond 2 weeks, we would appreciate if you contact the office with an update.
