A long time ago, my homecountry, Korea, was an agricultural society. Rice farming was most popular, and farming families used a tool called “Ki” (sounds like “key”) to winnow grains, separating chaff and debris. It looks like a bamboo basket, made by splitting willow or bamboo branches into flat pieces and weaving them together so that the front is wide and flat and the back is narrow and concave. This tool had another very important use than farming. When children wet their beds at night, their parents let them wear this thing over their heads and send them out to the neighbor’s house to get salt.
I don’t know how effective this method was at making children feel shameful, but it was practiced until as late as the 80’s in the rural areas. And I wonder why they asked for salt above all else? Well, I guess salt was a valuable resource in East Asia, where they developed soy-based fermented sauce and pastes. Another hypothesis about the use of salt was likely related to shamanism. Ancient people believed that salt had the power of purification. They scattered salt on the entrance of the house or even on a person when there was a bad spirit or misfortune entering the household. It was an act of warding off bad luck. So, getting salt probably became a preventive measure or a ritual, in hopes of no more bedwetting or nightmares, which were believed to cause the accident.
Continuing from the Sermon on the Mount, we will reflect on Jesus's statement, "You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world" (Matt 5) this week. Join our worship in person at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning. You can watch the live-streamed service at home as well via the church website or Youtube channel.
Click here to sign in your attendance on the website. If you have joys or concerns to share, please submit them with your attendance record. It's important for us to know you were with us and stay connected in prayer.

Ryan's Case for Smiles is a national volunteer organization that provides handmade whimsical pillowcases for children to help them cope with the stress of their illnesses and injuries. Cindy Kerr began making pillowcases for her son Ryan to brighten up his hospital room and put a smile on his face. Although Ryan is no longer with us physically, his legacy lives on in Ryan's Case for Smiles. There are over 100 chapters in the United States & Canada and over two million pillowcases have been delivered.
A new Western Suburbs chapter (Kane Co & McHenry Co, IL) has recently been established. We will be delivering bright, fun pillowcases to Ascension St. Alexius Women & Children's Hospital in Hoffman Estates, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, and Lurie Children's at Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley. The Ryan's pillowcase pattern is available at: caseforsmiles.org
