Today’s Scripture: I Tim. 2: 1 - 7 Sunday's Message:

 “It’s What We Do”

Our Lectionary text for the 15th Sunday after Pentecost comes from the letter to Timothy from the Apostle Paul. Timothy is a prime example of one who was influenced by godly relatives. His mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois, were Jewish believers who helped shape his life and promote his spiritual growth. The first “second-generation” Christian mentioned in the New Testament, Timothy became Paul’s protégé and pastor of the church at Ephesus. As a young minister, Timothy faced all sorts of pressures, conflicts, and challenges from the church and his surrounding culture. To counsel and encourage Timothy, Paul sent this very personal letter.

Paul was writing to Timothy to give him encouragement, support and instruction as a young leader in this rapidly growing Christ centered spiritual movement. He urges Timothy to hold on to his faith and to be strong as he leads in the face of many challenges and opposition. Paul then instructs Timothy in terms of church leaders and practical advice on pastoral care to the young and old.

The first thing Paul tells Timothy is that the most important thing he can do, and the people he leads can do, is pray! It is what we do! Although God is all-powerful and all-knowing, he has chosen to let us help him change the world through our prayers. How this works is a mystery to us because of our limited understanding, but it is a reality.

Paul based his instruction about prayer for all people on his conviction that God’s invitation for salvation extends equally to all people. The phrase "all people" captures the nature of the gospel. The world that God loves includes every person. He loves us as individuals whom he knows intimately, and Paul urges us to pray for everyone. Our earnest prayers will have powerful results.

Join me Sunday in-person or online as we unpack this powerful text and ask God how this applies to our lives.

Today’s Scripture:                   I Timothy 2: 1 - 7

Today’s Message:                   “It’s What We Do”

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.

What is Happening in the UMC?

Sunday – September 18th

11:15 a.m.

Pastor Gene - Presenter

United Methodists throughout the world are bound together in a connectional covenant in which we support and hold each other accountable for faithful discipleship and the mission of Jesus Christ. UMC congregations are not in an independent church.

Each local church congregation and property is connected for the benefit of the denomination, each church, and the ministry and mission of all at home and throughout the world.

Because of the current deep conflict within the UMC around issues of human sexuality, the postponement of our General Conference due to COVID until 2024, and the launch of a new Methodist denomination, Pastor Gene will be giving a complete history, overview, answer any and all questions and where HUMC is in this process.

It will be helpful if you go to the NC Conference website and familiarize yourself with the disaffiliation information.

Stephen Ministry is a team of laypeople doing one-to-one, distinctively Christian caring with those going through difficult times in life. The care is completely confidential. We know no one wants to admit they need help, but no one other than you and your Stephen Minister will know that you are having discussions. Difficult times in life constitute many things and times we all go through. Why go through it alone when you can have a person at your side to help carry the load. We are here to serve you and will be by your side whether you are lonely, ill, having problems at home, or grieving.

The Stephen Ministry team looks forward to helping you. The team consists of Carroll Harrell, Susan Winslow, Carol Kuhn, Ruth Lacefield, Kay Whedbee White and Jean Ashley (temporarily on leave of absence). If you want to know more about the ministry or need help yourself or know of someone who you think needs help, please contact one of the Stephen Ministers.

United Methodist Communication’s Ask The UMC service continues to provide in-depth answers to a wide range of questions while helping to build understanding about our faith. For instance, our new third installment of “Is The United Methodist Church really…?” provides well-documented, accurate information that seeks to clear up recent conflicting claims about disaffiliation, abortion and whether to pay apportionments. Share this series with members of your congregation so they can separate the facts from the fiction. Explore -  Ask The UMC! - by clicking the link below.
