Weekly message from Rabbi Glanzberg-Krainin
Do you believe in miracles?
For those of us who had the privilege of attending this past Tuesday night's program, sponsored by Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and hosted at Beth Sholom, on the phenomenal new book Miracles We Have Seen, the answer to that question has to be an unqualified "Yes!"
The program, based on a collection of essays gathered by Dr. Harley Rotbart, and featuring Dr. Rotbart and our own Dr. Harvey Guttmann who contributed an essay to the book, consisted of the narratives of a wide range of physicians who witnessed medical outcomes that could in no way be explained by rational phenomena. Stories included the man who survives falling 47 stories off a window washing platform in Midtown Manhattan; a woman who gives birth to a healthy baby after losing both of her fallopian tubes to ectopic pregnancies; and a 9 year-old boy who drowns and is lifeless after receiving CPR for close to two hours, but who somehow ends up walking out of the hospital three days later in perfect health.
What made the program truly memorable was that it did not limit itself only to the "success" stories-only to those who somehow managed to be cured against all the odds. Other stories included details of a woman who manages to show grace and resilience despite having constant medical procedures that would have embittered most of us; a grandmother who manages to stay alive until three weeks after her twin grandchildren become B'nai Mitzvah; and a woman whose son's malignant tumor miraculously disappears and who, in her gratitude, quits her high-paying job as a corporate executive to become the Executive Director of CURE, an organization that has raised millions of dollars for research into the cures for childhood cancer.
What we learned from participating in Tuesday night's program is that miracles involve our human capacity to experience refuat ha'nefesh v'refuat ha'guf-healing both of the spirit and the body. We do not always live in a world in which cures are found to every disease. But we do live in a world in which inexplicable things do sometimes occur; and the human capacity for resilience and grace in the face of long odds is truly inspiring.
May we be blessed with experiences of both kinds of miracles in our lives.

Weekly message from the Executive Director
Soon, hopefully July 1st, you will see the the launch of a new Beth Sholom website that gives members the ability to log on and manage their own accounts and make timely demographic changes to their portion of our Congregational database. Our new system, hosted by Shulcloud, is managed by a company providing similar service to over 600 shuls.
Next month, you will notice revised statements that are more easily understood. Our new system will make it possible for you choose how you want Beth Sholom to communicate with you. You will be able to choose to have statements, newsletters, and contribution acknowledgements e-mailed to you rather than sent through the Post Office. You will even be able to make payments online using your credit card. Watch for information on the launch of this new system and for instructions on how to log on to see your account.
Shabbat Shalom,
Harvey Friedrich
PS: Shore people - Mark your calendars. Shabbat at the Shore has been set for Friday, July 21st. Watch here for more information.
PPS: Our Mitzvah Garden needs help to make it through the summer. Have some time on your hands and a green thunb? Drop me a
note for more info.
