Happening This Week

God's Abundance: Celebrating our Youth

Please join us at 9:00 AM in the Sanctuary this Sunday morning as our Youth will report on their experiences with Faith Outreach Expedition (FaithX Service Trip) in Hershey, PA and the Church of the Brethren National Youth Conference (NYC) in Estes Park, CO.

We cannot emphasize enough how valuable and inspiring these events have been for those who attended, and we as a congregation intend to celebrate and appreciate how they have been encouraged through them. Even if you rarely attend Sunday School, please attend this week!! We will begin at 9:00 and conclude by 10:00, dismissing and re-gathering for worship following fellowship time from 10:00-10:30.

Within Worship at 10:30 AM, we will receive various songs and brief words from youth and advisors celebrating their experiences. We will also host District Moderator Nick Wingert, who will bring greetings within our time together. The message this week will be drawn from Matthew 14, in which Jesus fed over 5,000 people with 5 loves and 2 fishes, and account that reminds us how powerfully God is at work when people gather and seek to be "fed" by Jesus together. Please do not miss this very special time of worship!

Peach Fest in the Gathering Area!

The Gifts Discernment Team unanimously selected Tom McCracken to be the Assistant Moderator/Leadership Team Chair and presented his name to the Leadership Team for their approval. At the regular July Leadership Team meeting, July 21st, the Leadership Team unanimously approved Tom McCracken to replace Melanie Miller who resigned from that position because of health issues this past May.

Tom has been Assistant Moderator and Moderator for the church in the past. He is retiring from his business this summer and is presently traveling on Farewell Tours to his customers. Effective immediately, he is the official Assistant Moderator/Leadership Team Chair but will not be able to attend the Leadership Team meetings until this fall. In the meantime the Moderator is chairing the Leadership Team meetings.

INNER COURTYARD AREA

The Facilities Care Team has been working to restore the inner courtyard area over the past few months. We hope it will once again be a space for prayer and relaxation for all of us.

The space has been lightheartedly renamed by some as "Markel Park" in honor of the hours of planning and work done by Sheldon Markel who did most of the work related to flowers and the new patio area.

We are happy to have the area once again serving the church as a beautiful oasis at the center of our church.

LUNCH BUNCH is Taking a Summer Vacation!

At our last Lunch Bunch gathering in July at the Lyndon Diner, we decided that it would be best (because of fun travels and unpredictable temperatures) that we would take the rest of the summer off from our biweekly lunch gatherings.

We will resume gathering on Wednesday, September 2, at 11:30 am at Hoss's in

East York. Going forward, we have decided to meet just once a month on the first Wednesday, same time, 11:30am - 1pm, but at a different station (restaurant) each month! All ages are welcome!

Don't let transportation be a barrier - let us know of your need and we can gladly provide a ride! Carpooling is good for the earth and the more, the merrier! Have a wonderful summer and...see you in September (for Lunch Bunch)!

Gathering Area Quilt

Every month the quilt in the gathering area is changed to another beautiful quilt. The August quilt is named

"Ocean Wonders". Please look at this quilt closely to see all the shells, starfish, fish and other ocean friends. It is

so beautiful!

These quilts are made by Sid Innerst. Sid is a very talented quilter and we want to thank her for sharing her beautiful work.

Thank you to our church family for all the prayers, cards and support we received surrounding the passing of my sister JoAnn Krone.

Community Aid Partnership

First Church has initiated a partnership with CommunityAid, a source for donating gently used clothing and goods. This organization accepts donated items in good condition and offers them back to the community at affordable prices.

Making a donation is easy. CommunityAid currently has seven centers in central PA, with the York area store/donation location at 2001 Springwood Rd, site of the former Bon Ton store in the Queensgate Shopping Center. Simply drive up to the side of the store and employees will assist in unloading your items. In turn, by supplying partnership number 50344 (assigned to: First Church of the Brethren of York) to the CommunityAid employee, our church will periodically receive a monetary reimbursement based on the accumulated weight of donations.

A long list of acceptable items, along with hours of operation and other related information can be found on the display rack located on the wall in the Gathering Area at First Church. If you wish to receive a mailed copy, please contact the church office.
