Happening This Week

"Totally Consecrated to God"

This week in worship, we continue a series of messages which will tell the stories of some of our church's most bold and faithful leaders ones who lived out the truth and love of Christ in tremendous ways. This week we'll recall the story of Anna Mow, a woman who was missionary, teacher, and minister, a person of deepest conviction who was ahead of her time yet fully grounded in her devotion to God.

Worship will also include a special time for the children as well as singing, scripture, prayer and spoken word. We look forward to being in fellowship together as the Body of Christ! Join us at 10:30 AM, in person or online.

This Sunday is also our Annual Conference Report, a combined session at 9:00 AM in the Sanctuary for all adults and youth of our church. Expect to view the wrap-up video and hear from many who attended and are eager to share how meaningful and powerful this time together was for us.

Live Stream Worship

Our worship services are available via YouTube for those who wish to join that way. Click the link above shortly before the service begin to join in 10:30 AM on Sunday or anytime afterward. DVD copies of the services are also available.

CAMP EDER

This past week I had the privilege of being at Camp Eder with some of our church children for 3 days. It was wonderful being back at Camp and experiencing summer camp once again. My first impression was when the children were in a circle saying their names and something about themselves. One of the older boys shared he has aspergers and another boy shared he did too! There was no making fun of anyone, the campers got along and respected each other's differences. Also my dishes and other campers' dishes were cleared by one of the campers. No one asked him to do it, he just did it. What a wonderful example of service! This gives me hope for the future. There are lots of good things happening at Camp Eder. The weather was really hot but that didn't stop the spirit of God moving among the children and staff. Daily we had a worship service, a group bible study and a local preacher shared a bible story. So glad we value this experience for our youth by paying 80% of the camper fees so it can be more affordable. Diane Gibble

BLESSING THE LEARNERS – August 18

To support the academic success of neighborhood children, we will be collecting school supplies during worship for the Yorkshire Elementary School. Being the 3rd Sunday of the month, this will be in lieu of the usual food pantry collection. Please consider bringing the following requested school supplies: backpacks,

crayons (24 pack), colored pencils, skinny markers, black dry erase markers, #2 pencils, pink erasers, yellow highlighters, glue sticks, play-doh, tissues, hand sanitizer, headphones.

Thank you, Education Team & Witness Team

NEW COMMUNITY PROJECT (NCP) OPPORTUNITY

Last Sunday Dianne Hollinger gave a short announcement about a need that is urgent. An indigenous village in Ecuador does not have access to fresh water. They must carry all of the water from the river that they use. This is over 200 yards (imagine going to brush your teeth, and you have to walk more than 2 football fields to get it) away from their homes. And then, that water is poisoned from run-off of palm oil plantations (herbicides and insecticides) as well as the left over chemicals that wash into the river from the oil refinery business. The people are getting sick and dying at a much higher rate since these businesses began. The school cannot keep a teacher due to this situation.

A fresh water system costs $3600. This is not in the budget for NCP. Dianne was on a Learning Tour there in June, so she got to see the the need first hand. Please come prepared to donate to this worthy cause. 100% of your donation will go towards the water system. We will be collecting for the next few weeks, so you can bring financial donations later on also. It is best to put the money/checks into a church envelope and mark it so that you can get credit for this for tax purposes.

Dianne will also be giving a formal presentation to the church in September regarding her entire trip. Stay tuned, and please consider donating so the people don't have to drink poisoned water.

FROM THE TREASURER…..

As we are half way through the year, I wanted to give you an update on donations that we have made to other organizations that we support as well as financial assistance given to families in need. Note that this does not include a value for items donated to the Food Pantry, The Lehman Center, CDC or others. This list represents over $33,400 in giving! Thank you for your continued support of our church and the ministries that we are able to provide!

A Joy to Share!

Jessica Jasitt, who has been worshipping among us for many months, was recently granted commissioning for ministry through the Federation of Christian Ministries. We are grateful to God for this calling upon her and subsequent affirmation for her ministry of chaplaincy.

Dear York First Family,

We can’t thank you enough for the prayers, cards, visits, messages, etc. during this very trying time.

It helped considerably knowing that “someone was praying us through” (one of my favorite songs).

Love, Denny & Beth Anne Bahn

Since 2011 our Witness Team has sponsored the Cash for Causes program by selling Giant & Weis gift cards. The church receives 5% of sales to support various ministries. For 2024 the gift card sales will support The Lehman Center (Children’s Aid Society), New Community Project, and Carlisle Truck Stop Ministry. You may purchase the cards in amounts of $100, $50, $25, or $10. The cards make great gifts, especially at holidays. Consider donating cards to the Food Pantry or using them yourself any time you shop at Giant or Weis.

If you’d like to support this program, please see Becky Wenger before/after worship service OR mail your check (paid to York First Church of the Brethren) to 3011 Bedford Pl, York, PA 17408 and your cards will be mailed to you.
