Happening This Week

This Sunday, September 24, we will begin a series in worship on the book of Revelation, one which will continue through most of October. For many people, Revelation is an intimidating, even frightening, book to read and to begin to interpret. Rightly so, as it is an example of ancient apocalyptic literature, something foreign to modern minds and intended to raise eyebrows, so to speak. It is, however, an important testimony to Christ Jesus and the victory of God over the forces of sin and death itself. We will study it for what it is - a text offering consolation and hope for its (late first-century) readers, not as a predictor of so-called "end times" scenarios that might occur in the distant future. We hope to evoke much illuminating insight and provoke ongoing discussion of how Revelation is best understood as the good news of Jesus told entirely through symbol, imagery, and wonder as revealed in a unique vision to John. Come and see.

Also, please plan to attend and/or contribute to our Brethren Disaster Ministries Benefit Concert Sunday evening at 6:30 PM. It will include congregational singing, our chancel choir, and other music and creative elements and as well!

We look forward to our time together this Sunday. As usual, all are welcome!

NOTES FROM THE TREASURER………………….

As we approach the last quarter of 2023, the Finance and Leadership Teams are working on the budget for 2024. In order to determine a level of income for next year, we hope to have a good estimate of this year’s total giving. To help us in this process, please consider catching up on your offering, giving a little extra, or making your year-end gifts early! If you plan to schedule a Required Minimum Distribution, you may do that now. The distribution can be made any time before December 31.

If you use Online Giving, now is a good time to check your account, including your profile and your designated gift type and amount.

New church members and friends who wish to have envelopes for the remainder of this year, please contact Roy Rollman.

Stewardship is an important part of being a member of First Church of the Brethren. We all work together with our time, talent and treasure to do great things!

Since 2011 our Witness Team has sponsored the Cash for Causes program by selling Giant & Weis gift cards. The church receives 5% of sales to support various ministries. For 2023 the gift card sales will support The Lehman Center (Children’s Aid Society), New Community Project, and Carlisle Truck Stop Ministry. You may purchase the cards in amounts of $100, $50, $25, or $10. The cards make great gifts, especially at holidays. Consider donating cards to the Food Pantry or using them yourself any time you shop at Giant or Weis.

If you’d like to support this program, please see Becky Wenger before/after worship service OR mail your check (paid to York First Church) to 3011 Bedford Pl, York, PA 17408 and your cards will be mailed to you.

The Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College presents “Herrnhut: A New Look at the Origins of the Moravian Church” by Paul Peucker, on Tues., Sept. 26, 7:00 p.m., in the Bucher Meetinghouse.

Peucker is archivist of the Moravian Church in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. His new book, Herrnhut: The Formation of a Moravian Community, 1722–1732 received the 2023 Dale W. Brown Book Award. For details about the talk, visit www.etown.edu/youngctr/events or call 717-361-1470.
