Called to Serve and Care...
Servant Leadership and a Living Faith
This week in worship, we continue our series following the "Let Our Joys Be Known" curriculum - celebrating prominent themes and core convictions of our church, past and present. We'll encounter the call to "serve and care" which most of us recognize as something our church has a reputation for doing very well. We are reminded, however, that we cannot simply hope that "others" will do the work for us all. Every person must be open to serving those in need.
We'll consider the admonition from james 2 that "faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead." This powerful statement reminds us that faithfulness is not mere believing but it is made complete in our living and doing what God desires. We'll also be assured that the work of caring for each other is not drudgery, but a source of life-giving joy. Come and join us as we worship together this Sunday.
Blessing of the Backpacks
See below for more information... and remember that all school-aged children are invited to bring along backpacks, any adults that work in our education system as well, as we'll have a a special time of blessing and prayer within worship for you all. We'll also be collecting school supplies as a gift for our local Elementary School, sharing the love of Jesus in our neighborhood!

Children's Sunday School Classes
Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in Rooms 151, 152, and 155. Children grades PreK (age 4) and up will have class lessons, with singing included as well. Children ages 3-4 and younger are welcome to attend nursery care.
Youth Sunday School Class
Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Youth Room 149
Teachers are David Witkovsky, John and Diane Gibble, and Deb Klinedinst.
This class is for youth in grades 6-12. We hope to see you there!
** Note that the Membership Class begins next week, August 28!
Vine and Branches Sunday School Class
Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in Room 154. The class will be studying the "Current: Seeking God Together" lesson curriculum. Pastor Joel will be leading discussion.
Lamplighters Sunday School Class
Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in Room 145. The class is studying Max Lucado's "Begin Again."
Homebuilders Sunday School Class
Sunday mornings at 8:00 AM by conference call, holding class remotely. To join, contact Mike Martin at 717-840-4184 or Caretaker@TwinBrookFarm.com and leave a phone number. The class studies lessons from the "Guide for Biblical Studies" curriculum.

A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR!
If you enjoy singing, please consider joining the choir for this season of music and fellowship. We will begin rehearsals on Thursday, August 18 at 7:30 in the sanctuary. We will be singing a mix of traditional anthems as well as contemporary pieces and will be looking forward to an Easter cantata. If you have any questions, please reach out to Rebecca Wolf, musicdirector@yorkfirst.org.
Also beginning this year in September, we will begin bell choir!! This is an opportunity for those who enjoy music. You do NOT need to read music!! John Gibble will be directing this group and between John and Rebecca, you will have plenty of education and support to play this beautiful instrument. We look forward to having new members, including youth!!! Please let John or Rebecca know if you are interested so they can communicate with you when the schedule comes out.

Blessing of the Backpacks
This Sunday, August 21st we will celebrate the beginning of the new school year with a special time to bless all school age children, teachers, school staff, parents, and caregivers. We look forward to sharing this time together.
Children – bring your backpack to worship. Adults – bring your laptop, lunch bag, whatever represents your return to school. We trust that this time of blessing will provide the peace needed to start the year strong.
School Supplies will be collected to support the K-2 students of our neighborhood at Yorkshire Elementary School. The complete student supply list can be found at: https://tinyurl.com/jyztpdep Please have supplies to the church by Sunday, August 21.

Bring your lawn chair and tent (or not) and get ready to have a great time. We’ll provide dinner, games, vespers, and a fun campfire as well as maybe some other surprises. Feel free to come for just the evening or spend the night and enjoy a light breakfast in the morning. Come one, come all! Invite your friends, family, and neighbors. This will be a fun event for all ages!

10:00 Morning Program, 12:00 Delicious Lunch, 1:00 Afternoon program
Join us as we paint terracotta flower pots & plant seeds that will grow this fall. We will also be taking a guided orchard tour on a tractor wagon ride. For lunch we will be having BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, salad, and a brownie with ice cream.

Since 2011 our Witness Team has sponsored the Cash for Causes program by selling Giant & Weis gift cards. The church receives 5% of sales to support various ministries. For 2022 the gift card sales will support The Lehman Center (Children’s Aid Society), New Community Project, Carlisle Truck Stop Ministry, and LifePath Christian Ministries (formerly York Rescue Mission). You may purchase the cards in amounts of $100, $50, $25, or $10. The cards make great gifts, especially at holidays. Consider donating cards to the Food Pantry or using them yourself any time you shop at Giant or Weis.
I plan to attend our in-person worship services and will have the gift cards available
for your purchase before or after the service. However, if you will not be attending our in-person worship services, I will continue to send cards in the mail if you want to support this outreach ministry. Lehman Center "Wish List"
Items for donation to the Lehman Center are being collected in the basket in the
Gathering Area. Due to changes in the food pantry operations, these must be collected separately from food pantry supplies. Here are some items that are needed at Lehman Center.
Instant pudding (chocolate, banana)
Instant jello (orange, blue, green, grape, cherry)
Can fruit (pears, pineapples, fruit cocktail)
Applesauce (individual or jar)
Can vegetables (lima beans, peas, green beans)
Baby food - all stages
Baby snacks

Concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and church operations:
Rates of covid are on the rise once again in our region, so please take precautions as you are so led. We recommend that you exercise special precaution and be extra vigilant for any symptoms that you might experience. If you do have any, we strongly encourage you to contact your physician and take a covid test. The recent church policy has been that face coverings for our gatherings are optional for all attendees. But we are requesting that for the next few weeks you would consider wearing a mask to protect yourself and out of care and compassion for your neighbors. We will continue to gather in person to worship fully. Please be aware of those around you that are most vulnerable to disease and operate out of regard for the well-being of all.
Worship will be live streamed on our YouTube channel and recorded each Sunday morning at 10:30 AM indefinitely for those who are unable to be present, but it is not intended to replace physical attendance long-term.
Thank you all for understanding and for your faithful participation in our life together. Please do your part to prevent the spread of contagious disease as a holy expression of loving our neighbors as ourselves.
