Cross Country Team runs in CIF State Championships

T he cross country team competed in the CIF State Championships on Nov. 24 in Fresno.  It's easy to think of runners as isolated individuals trotting along. But Cross Country is a team sport, says Sofia Green '19, "because we train together and grow as a team....and every one of our scores matters" when it comes to meets. The notion of team resonated with Grace Mazolewski who said, "I'm so excited for us" to compete in a state championship. It's that emphasis on "us" that makes a team come together, and this year's team had a special season; it's first State Championship appearance in 8 years. We asked our student-athletes a few questions and their answers express passion for sport and the joy of the sisterhood.

How is the sisterhood part of Carondelet Cross Country?
"The sisterhood manifests itself in our team in the ways we encourage and push each other," Dana Cross '19.

Why is running important to you?
"Running is important to me because it brings joy to my every day life," Olivia Mazolewski '22.

Way to go Cougar Cross Country!

Students Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program

Caitlin Lightle '19, Kevin Cushing, and Grace Leary '19
The National Merit Scholarship Program named Caitlin Lightle and Grace Leary as Commended Students. Over 1.6 million students took the 2017 SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test last October and the top 3% of those test takers qualified as Commended Students this fall. Congratulations to Caitlin and Grace for their academic achievement.

Grace said, "this recognition feels so awesome feels like a tangible representation of my accomplishments."  Her classmate Caitlin encouraged other young women to work toward these types of goals: "I think that these types of recognitions are important for young women because it inspires them to keep striving for excellence in everything that they do, and shows them that through hard work and perseverance, they can accomplish anything they set their minds to."

Congratulations to Caitlin and Grace.

College and Career Updates

College & Career Counselors are meeting with freshmen this week during their Big History classes. The purpose of the sessions is four-fold:
  • to better acquaint students with their college counselors (assigned by alphabet)
  • to explore the course catalog and 4-year plan
  • to introduce Naviance, our online college and career platform
  • to complete an exploratory career inventory
The career exploration and subsequent self-discovery are meant to offer students clues to expand the vision of their future paths.  The results of each student's Career Interest Profiler and corresponding assignment will provide the counselors with valuable information that will be used during the academic advising process next semester. Ask your daughter to share her results (and her Holland Code) with you! Students' career exploration assignments are due December 7.

Career Exploration Lunchtime Speaker Series: Biomedical Engineering
Join Erin Araj '11 On Wednesday, Nov. 28 during lunch in the College and Career Center (room 13). Erin will share her experiences working as a biomedical engineer at Genentech. If your daughter thinks she may be interested in engineering or STEM, please encourage her to attend. All grade levels welcome.
