The Día de Los Muertos altar is gracing our Inner Court once again! This Mexican celebration honoring deceased family and friends is an ancient, mystical tradition mixing indigenous rituals and Catholicism. Thank you to the Latin@s Unid@s club for sharing this poignant cultural hallmark with us.
Upcoming Events & Special Schedules
(be sure to check Carondelet's
online calendar for updates and full information)
Last Thursday, we hosted our biennial Sr. Clare Dunn Forum. Every two years we hold the event where we welcome experts to speak from different points of view on a particular topic with the goal of engaging in thoughtful political discussion and fostering a desire to make positive and meaningful change surrounding an important issue. This year's topic was "Prison: To Punish or To Reform" and tackled the realities and statistics surrounding the American prison system.
One of the student moderators who planned the event
, Isis Tolson '19, mentioned the need for students to receive "a comprehensive understanding ...and bring important statistics and relevant data" into the conversation if we want "to have students get involved" in political change. See the full photo gallery.
Social Studies teacher Kristy Schow chaired this year's Forum and believes young women have a place in political life and the Sister Clare Dunn Forum, she said, "allows our students to engage in thoughtful political discussion. It also helps them reflect on their own political viewpoints and how they can best get involved in their school, community, or country to make positive and meaningful change surrounding an important issue." After they leave high school, she wants them to build on their confidence and, as Kristy encourages, "own who you are and chase your ambitions."
Sasha Williams to Speak in Nation's Capital
Sasha Williams '19 will step in front give a speech at the
Ignation Family Teach-In on Saturday, November 3 in Washington D.C. The Ignation Family Teach-In
is an annual gathering where young people from around the country come together in the context of social justice and solidarity to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate together.
Sasha's speech, "Justice for Nia: S
he Could Have Been One of Us" is about her experience of growing up as a young black woman in the Bay Area and how the murder of Nia Wilson galvanized her energy to work to ensure that young women of color are respected and protected in our communities. Students will hear a bit of the speech at Thursday's All Saint's Day liturgy.
Good luck to Sasha and all of our students going to Ven-a-Ver D.C at the end of this week!
