August 29, 2025

Dear Residents,

I hope you are all enjoying the last few weeks of summer. I started my introductions a week earlier than planned so that I could let you all know about a fun event happening next Friday – Splash Down in Orangetown! It is an adult night at the splash pad to support the Penguin Plunge, a not-for-profit that helps the families of seriously ill children meet their medical and support costs. Each year they host an icy plunge into the Hudson River in honor of the children they sponsor. Since their 2007 founding, they have helped 43 children and their families by raising over one million dollars. So please consider donning your bathing suit – or just attend to poke fun at those of us who do – from 6 pm to 8:30 pm at the Veterans Memorial Park splash pad in Orangeburg. There is a suggested minimum donation of $10 per person. We will have food trucks on site so bring the kids or grandkids to cheer on the adults! To sign up or donate, click HERE.

Please note that Town Hall will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025 in observance of Labor Day.

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable long weekend. See you back here next Friday!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

Schools are opening this coming week all around town. Consider leaving additional time for your morning commute as there will be additional cars, school buses, bicyclists, and pedestrians you will be sharing the road with.

Below are some safety tips that if followed will help keep everyone safe.

  • Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.
  • Come to a complete stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.
  • Eliminate distractions. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Reduce risk by not using your cell phone or eating while driving, for example.
  • Reverse responsibly. Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on the sidewalk, in the driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles.
  • Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that he or she wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride.
  • Talk to your teen. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and nearly one in four fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
