Dear Residents -

I want to thank Senator Bill Weber for hosting a Senior Advisory Council at Town Hall this week, where seniors learned about the many resources available from the Rockland County Office for the Aging. If you did not attend, I recommend you check out their website to see the services they offer to Rockland residents 60 years of age or older.

In addition, Orangetown Detectives Sullivan and Costello talked about several scams being perpetrated against seniors. They recommended, among many things, that you never answer the phone unless you know who is calling, never give out private information over the phone, and never give cash or gift cards in response to a call from O&R, E-ZPass, the Social Security Administration, the IRS, to get a grandchild out of jail or for any reason. Be aware that the incoming telephone number that shows on your phone can be made to look like it is coming from a legitimate business. There are countless scams, so please stay vigilant and, when in doubt, hang up and call the Orangetown Police Department at (845) 359-3700.

Well, it looks like it is going to warm up a bit next week – just in time for the Annual Penguin Plunge on March 2, 2025, from 12 pm to 2 pm at Nyack Memorial Park. Yes, some brave people will be plunging into the icy waters of the Hudson River to support the families of three critically ill children from Orangetown. Hang in there just a little longer, as we are now only a few weeks away from spring!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

Annual Rockland Read-In (and Pajama Day)

Supervisor Kenny participated in the Annual Rockland Read-In at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Pearl River last Friday. She was thrilled to read one of her all-time favorite books – “All Pigs are Beautiful” – to Ms. Walmsley’s 3rd grade class.

Remembering Firefighter Thomas Pomplin

Supervisor Kenny presented a proclamation to Chief Daniel Goswick of the Piermont Fire Department, to both honor and remember firefighter Thomas Pomplin during Black History Month. Mr. Pomplin, an African-American resident of Orangetown and a member of the Piermont Fire Department, died on August 5, 1854. However, his death was never recorded as a Line of Duty Death until recent years when research proved that his passing was a direct result of his response to a fire in Nyack. Thank you to Piermont’s Empire Hose Company #1 for correcting this injustice and for building a memorial for his selfless sacrifice.

Do Not Click the Link to Claim SSA Benefits!

Emails to apply for retirement starting in 2025 are phony

The Social Security Administration (SSA) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is warning the public of a new scam tactic by criminals trying to lure potential retirement applicants to their site.

This recent scam email appears to be from SSA and has the subject line: “Claim Benefits!” It states “Important: Apply for Your Social Security Benefits Starting in 2025”. The link within the phony email is disguised as SSA’s official website, www.ssa.gov or www.socialsecurity.gov. Clicking on the link within the email redirects individuals to a fraudulent site.

THIS EMAIL IS NOT FROM SSA.

One example of this new imposter email is shown here. It is important to see that the email is from “Social Administration,” and reflects a personal or non-government email address. Government agencies always have “.gov” as part of their official email address.

SSA OIG is advising you to always be cautious of responding to unsolicited emails that appear to be from an official government entity, such as SSA, or another federal agency. These emails are a variation of government imposter scams. DELETE IT. Don’t click on links or respond to any text, email, phone call, or letter that has characteristics of a scam. See warning signs at ssa.gov/scam. To contact SSA for business purposes, visit ssa.gov to find the correct information.

“Scammers use benefits, benefit increases, prizes, or problems to attract your attention so that they can entice or intimidate unsuspecting persons with their ploys,” said Michelle L. Anderson, Assistant Inspector General for Audit performing the duties of the Inspector General. “Our priorities are to educate consumers on how to avoid these vicious attempts and to help you keep your personal identifying information and money secure. We will continue to tell you when we become aware of tactics such as this one.”
