Dear Residents -
Last Sunday, Ramapo Democrat Councilwoman and Deputy Town Supervisor Brendel Logan-Charles and I were co-moderators for Congressman Lawler’s “town hall” event. While initially I was not going to comment on it, I reconsidered after receiving several emails, having personal conversations and viewing social media posts.
To be clear, what I have to say has nothing to do with my support for Congressman Lawler – I would say the same no matter who was on the stage. For those who didn’t see it, the event started with many in the crowd booing as a veteran was called to the stage to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Before one question was asked, it became evident to me that there was an organized group in attendance that had only one goal in mind – to disrupt the event. Sadly, it was done so at the expense of the other attendees who were there to hear from the Congressman on issues that were important to them.
I understand that some people are angry; much of which is directed at President Trump and Elon Musk. But that does not justify the behavior I witnessed that evening – from vile names, such as Nazi, bootlicker, and pedophile, being shouted at Congressman Lawler, to loud boos at his every response, even one condemning antisemitism on college campuses. My concern, and the reason I am commenting, is that there are some justifying this conduct. I’m sorry, there is absolutely no justification for it.
While I know there are those who will disagree and understand that this issue is much greater than can be adequately addressed in a short statement, but I do believe that I speak for most Americans when I say that we need to find a way back to a place where we can debate, discuss and disagree with one another respectfully. And to that end, I promise to always do my part.
Now, back to regular programming. Tomorrow the much-awaited Pearl River Farmers Market returns, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Pearl River Central Avenue Field. It is a great opportunity to purchase fresh produce, local artisanal goods, pickles, flowers and much more. Please stop by and support our local vendors.
May is an extremely busy month, so please scroll to the end to check out all of the events – from a historical house tour to the highly anticipated 3rd Annual Golden Gala. The Gala is being held on May 15, 2025, is $30 per person and is open to Orangetown residents 60 and older. With Sharyn McTigue again sponsoring a photo booth (a fan favorite), Brightview Lake Tappan providing party favors and music by Tommy Dunn & Jan Lynch Band, it promises to be an unforgettable event. If you will be joining us, please RSVP to creilly@orangetown.com.
Enjoy the weekend and hope to see you at the Farmers Market (rain or shine).
Regards,
