Town of Orangetown Update
Dear Residents -

I hope you were all able to spend sometime socially distancing with family and friends this past Memorial Day Weekend. Week 10 of sheltering in place finished up on Memorial Day and we finally received notification from the Governor's office that Orangetown can begin re-opening. Tuesday, May 26th - Phase 1 officially kicked in.

While all of us would love to jump back into our "old life", much has happened over the past 10 weeks and while it took just a flick of a switch to shut us down, it is going to take a lot more than that to start us back up. The Governor has identified 4 phases, with each phase having it's own requirements that must be met, before moving onto the next phase. Let's hope these transitions go fast and smooth.

If you are unsure if your business is allowed to re-open, please click here. If you know your business is allowed to reopen and you have yet to fill out your affirmation, please check out The Town of Orangetown's Kickstart Orangetown Page. Everything you need to know about Phase 1 is listed.

We are reaching a milestone for some of our residents. College and High School Graduations are happening or will be happening in the next few weeks, so please feel free to drop us an email on your schools' graduation highlights (as well as pictures, if possible) (Valedictorian, Salutatorian, etc....)

Please continue to stay safe, practice social distancing, wear a mask and wash those hands!

Thank you.
Teresa M. Kenny
Town Supervisor
Summer is coming - are you putting a pool in?
Just a reminder - especially during these trying times, where many of you may be doing "Stay-cations" this summer, if you are thinking of putting in a pool, whether it is above ground or built in, you must file for a permit with our Building Department.

For further information, please check out the Building Departments web-page.

Pet of the Week

Isn't Charlie Lawler just the cutest?

Charlie is a friendly, playful, and happy dog, who rarely barks. He enjoys long walks around the neighborhood, belly rubs, chasing chipmunks and squirrels, and eating human food. Charlie is a blessing in our lives.

Two businesses in Orangetown got back on track this past Tuesday, May 26th when Governor Cuomo allowed Phase 1 to re-open. I took part in a tour of Celtic Sheet Metal (top) and Valentine Electric. Both establishments were covered by the media and I was proud to stand next to County Executive Ed Day as he welcomed both places back to the workforce.

The principals of Celtic Sheet Metal (Michael Cunney, Brendan Cunney, Ailish Cunney and Kerri Cunney) proudly showed off the manufacturing side of their building, while owner Paul Valentine of Valentine Electric, accepted a token of my appreciation (a bag of masks) in front of his business.
Dominican College Honors Graduates During Virtual Commencement
On Sunday, May 17th, 2020 - Dominican College Class of 2020 graduated "Virtually", with fellow graduates, family, friends, administrators and faculty remotely watching "together".

More than 560 students received degrees during the Virtual Commencement – 101 doctorate degrees, 130 master’s degrees, 328 bachelor’s degrees and four associate’s degrees. Two students who passed away due to COVID-19, Kevin Graiani and Steven Malagraph, were awarded their degrees posthumously. Kevin was awarded a Doctorate in Nursing Practice and Steven was awarded a Masters of Science in Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner).

While not the graduation ceremony they expected even just 6 months ago, kudos to the Administration for working together to make this a special time for everyone involved. Dominican College will be holding in-person graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 on campus, when it is safe to do so.

Many thanks to Susan Cerra and Dominican College for their help in putting together this acknowledgement of their students, of which they are very proud.
Amelia Bruzzi is a nursing graduate with a 3.94 GPA and received the Sr. Natalie Casey Award for Academic Excellence.
Shannon Stapleton is a psychology major with a 3.89 GPA and received the Sr. Michele Nugent Award for Achievement in the study of the General Education Curriculum
Brianne Botta received the College’s highest honor, the Mother Geraldine Forkel Award for Academic Excellence. She is a social sciences major who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA and will be pursuing a master’s degree in occupational therapy at Dominican College.

Brianne also delivered the Baccalaureate Student Address at the Virtual Commencement.
Brandon Hasbrouck, Commencement Address Speaker - Dominican College
Alumnus Brandon Hasbrouck, ’08, Assistant Professor of Law at Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, VA, delivered an impassioned Commencement Address to the graduates. He challenged the graduates to “do justice” in whatever career path they choose. “A kind of justice that smashes hierarchies, privileges, and entitlement. A kind of justice that requires courage – courage demonstrated by you throughout your time here at Dominican College – that even when you take a loss, and you will, you get up every single time and persist,” he said. “There is no path to justice that is only comfortable and convenient. We will not achieve or create justice until we’re willing to sometimes position ourselves in uncomfortable places and be a witness. Justice is hard work. It is unending work. It is our life’s work. You are all ready!”

Dominican College awarded Hasbrouck with the honorary degree of Doctor of Law, in recognition of his accomplishments in the practice of law and of his dedication to criminal justice reform.
