Los Altos United Methodist Church

Weekly Newsletter

July 30, 2023

My family and I are about to head out on a week’s vacation, one we planned before I knew I was going to be appointed to Los Altos. We’re looking forward to time together, taking a few hikes, and eating delicious food. It’s important for all of us to take time to rest and renew our bodies, minds, and spirits. God took a Sabbath after creating the heavens and the earth and witnessed to us the power and importance of rest. In a world that worships busyness this is an important message to hear.

This might make you wonder, “what happens when the pastor is away?” Well, the good news is that this church has a wonderful, competent staff and lay leadership that helps keep our congregation well-cared-for when I am away. For pastoral care emergencies, I ask a neighbor-pastor to help with those responsibilities in my absence. (I offer to do this for them, too). Rev. Lee Carlile, a retired clergywoman who served at Grace in Long Beach at one time, will preach on August 6th. Rev. Lee and her husband, Don, are active in the Long Beach Chorale, among other things. And before you know it I’ll be back in the office on Tuesday, August 8th refreshed and ready to continue the good work we’ve started together.

Before I head on my trip, I will be here this Sunday to conclude our series on joy. I hope it’s provided you an opportunity to look for joy in your every day and to be thankful for the many blessings of life. This week we’ll talk about joy in things hoped for. I think this is a great topic for the season we all find ourselves in– after COVID when we’ve endured so much, and not sure about what the future holds. Can we find joy in the uncertainty, in the hope for a better tomorrow? Scripture gives us some words of comfort and joy as we think about this together. I hope to see you at 9 am or 10:30 am worship. And make sure to stop by and grab a donut and coffee and say hi to others in the community before taking off for the day.

Name Tag Time!

Do you have your church name tag that has not been used in a while and is hidden in a drawer? Now is the time to put it to good use so that we can all know each other’s names and welcome newcomers, as well.

We have a few existing name tags available on the Welcome Table in the Sanctuary narthex. Please check there for your name.

If you do not find your name, we will have paper adhesive name tags on the Welcome Table that you can fill out. See you Sunday!

Church Council Meeting Scheduled

Wednesday., August 9, 7:00 p.m., Heritage Hall

Pastor Erika has scheduled a church council meeting for Wednesday, August 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Heritage Hall. As the United Methodist Book of Discipline states, "The church council shall provide for planning and implementing a program of nurture, outreach, witness, and resources in the local church. It shall also provide for the administration of its organization and temporal life."

We will use this time to meet and discuss several important aspects of the church and how we will move forward as a church body. The Church Council consists of elected leaders and program ministry representatives. Church members are welcome to attend, but not vote. Please plan to attend.

In Memoriam: Rev. Jerry Larsen (1944-2023)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rev. Jerry Larsen on Saturday, July 8.

Rev. Larsen had a 35-year relationship with Los Altos United Methodist Church, joining us in 1988 as Associate Pastor, becoming Lead Pastor in 2002, and finally, Pastor Emeritus in 2018. After his retirement in 2011, Rev. Jerry continue to be active at LAUMC by teaching bible classes, participating in weekly “Praise Time” at the LAUM preschool, and was always a presence at church services, Everyone’s Inn, and church activities.

Rev. Jerry touched countless lives with his kindness and warmth. Please keep his wife, Linda, and their family in your thoughts and prayers. Condolence cards may be sent to: Linda Larsen, 6523 E. El Pulcro St., Long Beach, CA 90815.

A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, September 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the LAUMC Sanctuary.

LAUMC Door-of-Faith 2023 Peanut Butter Drive Update

The annual Peanut Butter drive has kicked off! We are off to a great start! We already have 20 jars with 852 ounces in the first week. Reminder that we will be collecting peanut butter Through August 13.

Our peanut butter really helps the Door-of-Faith. Costco has an excellent value on a two-jar package. LAUMC has become the primary source of the peanut butter supply for the Door-of-Faith. Please take advantage of any sales and get a couple of jars for the children. If you prefer, cash or Scrip donations to the Door of Faith through LAUMC are also extremely helpful to the Orphanage.

Thanks for your support. If you have any questions, please contact the church office at (562) 598-2541.

Thank You from CSULB Young Scientists Camp!

We are just finishing up our second week of science camp at CSULB. This summer we have 245 kids are enrolled in camp, 53 of whom are experiencing homelessness or are foster youth in Long Beach Unified School District. This latter group attends camp free. Recommended by their school counselors, we bus the kids to CSULB, provide two weeks of hands-on science investigations and academic enrichment, provide a snack and lunch, school supplies, offer vision screening (and free glasses) and more. The younger children are Toying Around with Science (exploring science and engineering of toys and games) and the older kids are doing Biomimicry (studying nature to make better inventions). I am so grateful to the members of our church who generously donated during the Alternative Christmas Market. Your gifts help make this opportunity a reality. On behalf of all our campers, thank you. You can visit our Facebook page to see what the kids have been doing! —Laura Henriques
