As temperatures drop, please take extra precautions to keep yourself, your family, and your neighbors safe. A few important reminders:
👥 Check on vulnerable neighbors — seniors, people with mobility issues, and those living alone may need help with heating, groceries, or medication.
🧣 Dress warmly — wear layers, hats, gloves, and waterproof boots. Keep infants and small children extra bundled.
🏠 Heating safety — only use heaters per manufacturer instructions. Keep flammable items at least three feet away from portable heaters and never leave them unattended.
🔥 Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning — don’t use grills, generators, or camp stoves indoors. Install working CO detectors and test them regularly.
🚗 Driving in winter conditions — slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and keep an emergency kit (blanket, water, flashlight, phone charger) in your vehicle. Never drive through icy roads or standing water.
🚰 Protect plumbing — insulate exposed pipes and know how to shut off your water in an emergency to prevent burst pipes.
🐾 Pets in cold weather — bring pets indoors when temperatures are low. Provide warm shelter and fresh water.
🚨 Know the signs of hypothermia — uncontrollable shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and extreme fatigue. If you suspect hypothermia or carbon monoxide exposure, call 911 immediately.
