The Gospel
But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.

Elevation Ceremony of
Very Rev. Sahag Yemishian to Dzayrakooyn Vartabed
Sunday, May 29

His Holiness Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia has granted the right of "Dzayrakooyn Vartabed," Archimandrite Superior, to Very Rev. Sahag Yemishian, Pastor of Holy Trinity Church of Worcester. MA.

The degree of Dzayrakooyn Vartabed, or Archimandrite Superior, consists of the conferral of 10 advanced theological degrees on top of the four given at the time of elevation to the rank of Vartabed (Doctor).

All of these degrees were originally academic degrees and most likely conferred on separate occasions. Only a bishop who has been elevated to Dzayrakooyn Vartabed can confer the degree on others.

The service itself consists of various parts. First is the presentation and examination of the candidate's faith and knowledge, after which the various degrees are conferred through the singing of special hymns, the recitation of Psalms and readings, as well as the prayers of the ordaining clergyman.

Throughout the services, the Archimandrite's staff, which symbolizes the candidate's authority to preach, is veiled like a bride, until, at the conclusion of the services, the newly elevated Dzayrakooyn Vartabed receives the staff and preaches the sermon.

It is not often that this degree is conferred outside the Catholicosate, thus rarely has this moving service been witnessed by the faithful outside the four ecclesiastical centers of the Armenian Church.

On Sunday, May 29, the elevation to Dzayrakooyn Vartabed of Very Rev. Father Sahag Yemishian by His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, will provide a unique and unprecedented opportunity to witness this historic and moving religious event. His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General of the Eastern Prelacy, will perform the Divine Liturgy

It is with joy that our parish will host this unique and rare occasion and hope everyone will join us Sunday.  A reception will follow immediately after.
