"Soup"er Bowl of Caring!!
Presented by the St. Alban's High School Youth
The high school youth group is organizing for the second year the project The Souper Bowl of Caring for the benefit of the community. This is a soup/broth drive that will benefit the Preble Street Soup Kitchen and local food pantries. We hope to raise more than the 83 items of food that we donated last year. Please help us break of goal for this year of collecting 100 cans of broth or stock.

These cans of stock, broth, and soup will be collected in the boxes in Bonoff Hall and will be distributed to the pantries by the youth.
If you would prefer to bring in money rather than shopping for canned soup and broth, you can do that, too. The youth will use the money and go shopping for cans on the due date for all money and cans, which is Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, 2019 by noon. It's always a particular privilege to step up into St. Alban's pulpit. Over the decades so many fine preachers have shared their words and God's love from there.

When I open my mouth, I pray to meet their high standards, and yours.

When I served as the Provost of the National Cathedral, I said the same little prayer any Sunday I humbly stepped up into the awesome Canterbury Pulpit. There's a small plaque near the stairs that only the preachers can see. It notes that the Rev Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his last Sunday sermon from that pulpit... setting an impossible standard for any who have followed, certainly me.

But, I've read his words from that sermon again and again. He said, "Through our...genius, we have made this world into one small neighborhood and yet...we have not had the ethical commitment to make it a brotherhood. We will do this...we will learn to live together as brothers. Or we will all perish together as fools. We are tied together in the single garment of destiny, in an inescapable network of mutuality."

He seemed to be saying, we have received in our life and faith an important gift, an invitation to relationship. Relationship with God and with all of God's people. And during his years...and these days in our own times, it is seems particularly important that we open this invitation and grasp it in our hands and act on it with all our hearts.

We have received in our faith an invitation to relationship. It is an invitation we dare not ignore. Let us nurture relationship, right here, right now.

Teachers Needed! Please help out!

Debbie Fisher Says THANK YOU ... But We Still REALLY Need Teachers.
Three people recently signed up to teach in Godly Play and Our PLACE, which is terrific and greatly appreciated. But ... teachers are still needed in all three programs (Godly Play for 4 & 5 year olds, Our PLACE for 1st-4th graders, and Connect for 5th & 6th graders). You decide which age group you'd like to lead, determine three or four Sundays you're available between now June 9th, We provide all supplies & materials and teacher training as well. It's fun, worthwhile, and a great way to get to know the children of our parish. Thank you!

Please help out! It's fun, rewarding and necessary. See Debbie after church, call her @ 799-4014,
e-mail her @

Thank you!

Important Announcement and Training for Celtic Eventide

Dear Celtic Eventide community,
Happy 2019!
I hope you all enjoyed some amount of rest, peace and time with family and/or friends during the busyness of the holiday season.
Among the many wonderful things that are true about our Celtic Eventide experience is that we have all stepped up leaders of the various aspects of this great weekly gathering. It has been a joy being the coordinator. But I seem to have worked myself out of a job!
I am writing to let you know that I will no longer be over-all coordinator of the Celtic Eventide Service. It's good news because it means all of you who participate in the service are stepping up to the plate and taking ownership. Read more and a message from Father Tim+  here.

In recent years this is how St. Alban's has described who we are. These words reflect both our experience of this good place and our aspiration of who God is calling us to be.

We hope your experience here has begun to reflect this as well!
And we invite you to get to know your new church more deeply.

Please accept a warm invitation

Mandatory Training
February 10th
This fall our Vestry passed a resolution expressing our commitment to following our diocesan Safe Church Guidelines.  You can read the resolution here.

While the training is available to all, it is required for all clergy, paid church staff, regular pastoral visitors, Eucharistic Ministers and Visitors, Worship Leaders, and adults who supervise children and youth on and off church premises.  Safe Church certification remains current for 4 years.

To learn more about the Safe Church training requirements or to complete the online training, see the directions found here. We are hosting a training on Sunday, February 10 after the 9:30 worship service for anyone who needs technical assistance completing the online training. See the clergy or staff with questions.

You are invited!

Our Assistant Rector, Holly Clark, and her fiancé, Jonathan Hoffmann, are getting married on Saturday, January 19 at 1 pm at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke at 143 State Street, Portland. Bishop Stephen Lane and Fr. Thomas Murphy of All Saints Parish, Brunswick will be the officiants.

The St. Alban's community is invited to the wedding and the simple reception to follow in the parish hall. If you plan to attend, please let us know by email, so we can hope to have enough cake for everyone!

Can't make it to the service? You can watch the live stream here.

Book Club Update
The holidays are over, and now it's time to remind you all about the
January 22nd Book Club meeting.

Since the December meeting was cancelled, I hope it's still agreeable to discuss both "The Summer House," and "The Trouble with Goats and Sheep," on the 22nd.
Whether you've read both books or just one, it will be good to get back together to launch another year!
Also, please think about some titles we can consider for 2019.

Please email Sheila at s[email protected]
if you have any questions.
