HOW DO YOU WISH TO
LEAVE THIS GOOD LIFE?

For  most older Americans a desired peaceful death is elusive.
Sadly, aggressive medical procedures are more
often the norm.

How does this happen?
How could we change the pattern?

I am not sure why, but autumn is a time of year when we seem particularly aware of all that we have been given. Perhaps it's because there are so many activities and opportunities in this season. Perhaps it's because of the natural, bountiful harvest time we're in and the Thanksgiving plans we make.

And perhaps...it's because this is a season when we reflect on what we've been given with an eye toward what we are called to share.

As we remember how graced and gifted we are, our imaginations turn toward what we might give of all we've been given. I think this imagining, this wondering is a sacred step. And I invite you to join me in it!

This Sunday we celebrate our Ministry Fair at St. Alban's, and we launch our Stewardship plans for the 2019. It's no accident that we do these good things together. The Fair gives us a chance to be stimulated by some of the remarkable efforts that together we make in God's world. And... receiving our pledge packets for a new year reminds us of a sacred invitation to give of our time, talent and treasure.

My prayer is that you'll join all your St. Alban's neighbors in this good and stimulating wondering!

See you in church

The Nurse is in!
liz blood pressure

Did you know?

Did you know that our own Parish Nurse and active parishioner, Liz Davy was recently applauded at the Anniversary Dinner for the Portland Free Clinic for her decades of service to some of the neediest in our community? Liz, a gifted RN, has been serving there... year-in, year-out nursing with all her warmth and care. She has recently retired from this good clinic work, but she and Dick remain active supporters.

The Portland Community Free Clinic, located at 103 India Street, provides primary care to uninsured, low-income adults living in Cumberland County, Maine. All services at the PCFC are provided at no charge.

In honor of Liz's devotion and St. Alban's deep appreciation of her, the St. Alban's Clergy Discretionary Fund, filled with gifts from the parish, has made a donation of $250 to the Portland Free Clinic in honor of Liz Davy, our Parish Nurse

What feeds your soul?

Saint Alban's Stewardship Committee invites you to...

Saint Alban's Ministry Fair
Sunday, October 14th

The rich parish life that we share at Saint Alban's would not be possible without the efforts of parishioners who work behind the scenes to enhance our worship experience and foster fellowship. From arranging altar flowers to reading scripture during worship services - from teaching our children to feeding the hungry - opportunities for involvement at Saint Alban's vary as widely as do the talents and interests of our parishioners.

This will be a great time to learn about the many lay ministries that exist at Saint Alban's.
We hope you will find a ministry that interests you and feeds your soul.

A Beautiful 2019 Calendar celebrates our Apostles' Windows
On Sale Now!

Thinking of
an early Christmas gift?

Have you ever wondered about the twelve windows at the rear of the sanctuary?
Do you know what they represent?
One of the windows shows a snake coming out of chalice.
Another shows a battle axe.
What could they mean?
Find out by purchasing a beautifully designed 2019 calendar.   The colorful pictures were taken by Peg Keyser and the research was completed by Rev. Ben Thomas.  Do you remember our summer intern from 2017?.  Here is a "colorful" story:  one Apostle met his end after being struck by a fullers' bat and then sawed in two.  Who was that and what is a fullers' bat anyway?  The mystery just gets deeper.  The calendars cost $20 each and are a wonderful gift for family and friends.  They will be on sale after services throughout the fall.
Help support St. Alban's.
Your Sacred Story
Interested in sharing your Sacred Story?

This January and beyond St. Alban's is returning to a great parish tradition...the opening and sharing of our stories...our Sacred Stories.

A Sacred Story group is a small, confidential gathering of St. Alban's adults who want to deepen their faith, build community, and draw closer to God by sharing key moments of life with one another. These may be formative tales or  remembrances of where we experienced the holy or the sacred in our every day lives.  We have refreshed the similar, but not identical program, that was offered several years ago.

Assistant Rector Holly Clark and Ogden Williams will co-lead this offering for adults in the January session. Other cohorts will be formed in the coming year.
