Remembering is a key part of our task as Christians. As a people who deeply value tradition, as well as the witnesses and saints who went before us, we remember. We are also called in our sacrament to act "in remembrance of" Christ's presence and sacrifice. In this sacred setting, remembering is not just about recalling past events...it's about being in relationship with, engaged with...in a true memorial with... the new thing God has done in our midst, holding this heartfelt connection in reverence and understanding of its ongoing power.

Memorial Day is a time we do some powerful remembering in our national world. As a people, we do more than merely recall those who sacrificed for us and our safety. We actively step up and celebrate them. And, through story-telling and naming of names, we become engaged with those who went before. We tell again their stories and connect them to our ongoing story. In a true memorial to them we acknowledge our debt and our shared visions and dreams. And then we move forward... fed, inspired and hopeful.

So it is in our spiritual lives...our faith calls us to remember, and then points us, and indeed urges us, to be at the leading edge of the whole culture, articulating in story and music and art and philosophy and education and poetry and action the historically-rooted but future-focused Christian challenge, leading the way...with joy and humor and gentleness and good judgment and wisdom.

We look back and remember with care...and then we move forward with faith. May it be so as a people and a church.
