Overview of Children and Youth Programs

Children's Chapel
Ages four through sixth grade! A space of welcome, music, and prayer before lessons in our age groups. 9:30am, downstairs in Godly Play.

Nursery : During 9:30am worship for babies and toddlers.

Godly Play : ages 4- grade k
Wonder and storytelling with inviting object lessons.

Our Place : grades 1st- 4th
A rotation based program of Bible exploration.

Connect : grades 5th -6th  
God's story meets our story with games, artwork and fun!

Rite 13 : grades 7th- 8th  
Focusing on God at work in our lives through service and formation.

High School Youth Gatherings
  Our usual meetings for fun, food, fellowship, and prayer are on the first and third Sundays of each month at 3:30 - 5 pm.
The adults involved with leading the high school youth group are the Rev. Holly Hoffmann, Anne Sedlack, and Peter Durgin.

Help the Pilgrims
Summer is here! Please take a St. Alban's Clynk bag for your returnables to your home or camp to support St. Alban's youth. Money collected through the Clynk bags from St. Alban's go to support the High School Youth Pilgrimage in the Summer of 2020.
How it works
When the bags are full, bring them directly to a Hannaford Grocery Store, scan the bag's tag, and know your donation is then credited to our Clynk account.
(Please do not bring full Clynk bags to the church.)

Yoga At St. Alban's
Sign up today for the  
July classes
Wednesdays July 3, 24, 31, August 7th, 11th ,  
9:30-10:45 am 

All Levels Yoga is suitable for continuing and beginning students. Our focus will be on cultivating a clear, intelligent and balanced practice of postures, breathing techniques and relaxation.  Class size is small and props are used to individualize student's needs / abilities. The yoga props will be provided. If you own a yoga mat, please bring it with you.
To sign up, email ktucker@stalbansmaine.org  and then bring a check payable to St. Alban's for $60 to the office at St. Alban's. Note in the memo line that the check is for yoga class.

Like you, I always seem to have many things calling for my attention. This liveliness of focus is such a pattern in my life, that I suspect I like it, and am somehow rewarded by it. 

But...and it's a big but...we also know how we can be drawn in too many directions, paying attention to too much, not discerning what's really of value or overloading, stressing on what we've taken on.

And then, if we're fortunate, along comes vacation! Mine begins tomorrow. And I want to let you know that for two weeks, I intend to change my focus, to rest more, and enjoy the stimulation of life in a different realm. At our cottage on the shore, I will be paying attention in a renewed way to family and friends and nature and personal refreshment.

Sabbath is a sacred idea of altering our focus and energies by ceasing our work and calming our desire for productivity. For me, Sabbath is a time for fewer "I should" and more "I wonder."

In our faith, we are given such freedom to imagine where God invites our attention. It's a gift we're all given and yet hard to claim. I pray that you too can claim such time.

I will see you in a couple of weeks. I will keep you in my prayers but not on my calendar.

More than $10,000 has been received and is being shared with key agencies, including the Portland Free Clinic, St. Elizabeth's Essentials Pantry and the Preble Street Center,  each on the front lines of supporting Mainers new and old who are in need.
Thanks for your support and prayers for the asylum seekers, including families in our community who are housing and loving guests one family at a time!

Special Family Service
July 21st 
at the 9:30 am service we celebrate in the style of a Family Service, made unique by the lifting up of our kids and youth into all corners of liturgical participation. The language of the liturgy is adapted to be accessible for all ages, and there are info blurbs throughout the bulletin with background on the main elements of the liturgy. We invite you, in the wonderful spirit of our Godly Play program, to "make yourself ready" for this unique service, anticipating its power for people of every age.

Camp St. Alban's Service Project
Every year during summer camp, we incorporate a service project to emphasize to the children that there's a great big world our there that needs their help. This year we will support St. Elizabeth's Essential's Pantry and also the recently arrived asylum seekers in Portland.  
Please donate the following items for children ages 4-11:  new sleepwear, new underwear, size 4 & 5 diapers, gently used, good condition summer clothes gently used, good condition toys.
On the last day of camp, the children will sort the clothes and bundle the diapers. Thank you!
More Summer Fun

With the arrival of summer comes the arrival of Summer Fun Days at the 9:30 am service.

Each Sunday from June 16th-August 25th, we'll delight children ages 4 - rising 6th grade with outdoor fun & games, creative art projects, and perhaps even a friendly soccer match. We're looking for one or two families to host each Sunday - we'll help with ideas (seashell picture frames, sand art, life-size Noah's Ark) or provide your own!

In order to volunteer directly with the families when they are staying at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church, you need to have completed a training offered by GPFP.  
The next Greater Portland Family Promise training will be offered on Tuesday, July 16 from 5:30-8:30 pm at Falmouth Congregational Church. Please spread the word! Saint Alban's Gives Back
St. Elizabeth's Essentials Pantry: Helping all who come to our doors, including asylum seekers new to Maine
St. Alban's volunteers serve the first Tuesday of the month at St. Elizabeth's. There were 238 people that lined up at the Essentials Pantry our last day in search of basic items that many of us take for granted.  
Donations have been flowing in and many hands have been sorting, organizing, and giving them out to those in need.  For the summer, volunteers are sorting on Monday mornings 9-11 am at the Cathedral to set up for St. Elizabeth's to open the following day. If you are interested in helping on a Monday, please contact the Rev. Holly Hoffmann directly.  St. Elizabeth's has expanded its hours to be open 9-11 am on Tuesdays this summer to help meet the need of the increasing number of people coming to St. Elizabeth's for daily essentials. 
A special thanks to those who contributed, on very short notice, to a request from St. Elizabeth's and the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition (MIRC) for long sleeve tee shirts and sweat pants for children asylum seekers participating in recreational activities at the ice rink at the Portland Expo. MIRC has been assisting and organizing the daily operations for asylum seekers at the Expo. St. Elizabeth's organized a drive to meet this request, and the eight sponsoring parishes responded. Thank you for your contributions! In the last few weeks, St. Elizabeth's has helped provide children's clothing and baby bottles to those at the Expo as well as promoting and supporting a baby food drive by the St. Luke's Food Pantry, all requests through MIRC. The baby food drive collected approximately 2,000 jars of food in just 1.5 hours. This far exceeded the original goal of 300 jars. Thank you to those who responded with such generosity!
St. Elizabeth's will continue to serve all who come through its doors on Tuesdays, which includes many new faces each week. 
Household items:  large cooking pasta pots, place settings (large and small plates, soup bowls, mugs,  spoons, forks, and knives) No kitchen knives or glassware, please. Sheets and blankets (labeled with size) are also needed. 
Babies and children:  strollers (no car seats), shoes, children's books and dictionaries for children and youth
Everybody: single toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar body soap, deodorant, shampoo and French and Portugese dictionaries.
It would be very helpful to our volunteers if you would label your donations and put them in bags, i.e. "boys summer shirts," "women's shoes," "twin sheet set," etc.
