Summer Reading Suggestions
This summer, whether you’re at the shore, on a flight, or sitting under a shade tree, take a book with you. Reading expands our imaginations, enlightens us, and increases our vocabulary.
Here are a few suggestions for your summer reading enjoyment: For inspiration and spiritual growth try Forgiveness: A Lenten Study by Marjorie Thompson or The Return of The Prodigal Son and other books by Henri Nowen.
For those interested in early Christianity and how it grew, try Bart Ehrman’s The Triumph of Christianity: How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World or Charlotte Allen’s The Human Christ: The Search for the Historical Jesus.
While it may seem like heavy reading, Philippians and Ephesians are brief letters by the Apostle Paul who provides an insight into the issues that he and the early church faced. Philippians is a letter of thanks and love to the people of Philippi. It contains some of Paul’s most beautiful statements of love and Christology. Ephesians was written to help the early church appreciate God’s purpose, grace, and goals for the church. Add 1 Corinthians 13 and you have wonderful words of life.
The display cart outside our church library has additional suggestions, plus instructions about borrowing books. You can view the entire CUMC Library holdings at http://www.chathamumc.com/cumc-library/.

This Sunday’s service at 10:00 a.m. will feature Mike Maguire and Peter Hill, piano four-hands, playing The Sweet By and By. Join us!
Our program season finished on June 12th until the Fall. Thank you to our musicians and artists for your hard work and for making each Sunday special with your music throughout the year. Look here for information as we begin again in September. Enjoy your Summer!
Chatham UMC continues our effort to collect funds and then distribute those donations as reparations each time the congregation sings a Spiritual during the Sunday service. Early American Black Hymns and Spiritual Songs whose authors were not recorded never received the payment that they deserved when their music was published. This effort on their behalf is a small, but powerful, way to honor their enormously important contributions to the lexicon of hymnody. CUMC will soon send our first donation to the Newark Boys Chorus School. Our efforts in this manner will be ongoing.
