Summer Reading Suggestions
This summer, whether you’re at the shore, on a flight, or sitting under a shade tree, take a book with you. Reading expands our imaginations, enlightens us, and increases our vocabulary.
Here are a few suggestions for your summer reading enjoyment: For inspiration and spiritual growth try Forgiveness: A Lenten Study by Marjorie Thompson or The Return of The Prodigal Son and other books by Henri Nowen.
For those interested in early Christianity and how it grew, try Bart Ehrman’s The Triumph of Christianity: How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World or Charlotte Allen’s The Human Christ: The Search for the Historical Jesus.
While it may seem like heavy reading, Philippians and Ephesians are brief letters by the Apostle Paul who provides an insight into the issues that he and the early church faced. Philippians is a letter of thanks and love to the people of Philippi. It contains some of Paul’s most beautiful statements of love and Christology. Ephesians was written to help the early church appreciate God’s purpose, grace, and goals for the church. Add 1 Corinthians 13 and you have wonderful words of life.
The display cart outside our church library has additional suggestions, plus instructions about borrowing books. You can view the entire CUMC Library holdings at http://www.chathamumc.com/cumc-library/.

Dear Friends,
We have 9 youth and 4 adults who will represent Chatham UMC on this year’s RISE mission trip. We are sending two teams that will help make homes safer, warmer and drier in northern Appalachia. This is the 41st year of sending teams from Chatham UMC. It has been a mutual blessing for those who are giving and receiving for every youth and adult who have participated in this vital ministry.
We are in need of some serious fundraising support. We need to raise over $9,000 each year to send two teams to RISE for a week. If you would like to support this ministry, click on the Make a Donation below and you will be directed to our website donation page. Please choose RISE Youth to input your tax deductible contribution. Checks can also be made payable to CUMC, and earmarked RISE 2022. Thank you!

Memorial Service Postponed
The Memorial Service for longtime CUMC member, Jerry Cunningham, who entered Life Eternal on January 14, 2021, has been postponed. Jerry's wife Isabelle recently had a fall and needed surgery for her hip. The family has decided to postpone Jerry's service so that Isabelle can be present.
We will inform you of a date in the Summer or Fall when the service is rescheduled. Until then, let's keep Isabelle and the Cunningham family in our prayers as they care for one another.
If you know people who were planning on coming to Jerry's service tomorrow, please let them know. Thank You.

This weekend’s June 12th, Sunday service at 10:00 a.m. will include the Covenant Choir with the Ukulele Orchestra performing Sing Together by Train and Ubi Caritas by Victor C. Johnson. The Wesley Ringers will ring What a Friend We Have in Jesus.
Our program season will finish on June 12th until the Fall. We will thank our musicians, artists, and educators on Sunday, June 12th with Music, Arts, and Teacher Appreciation Sunday. Thank you to all of our musicians and educators throughout our year for making each Sunday special with your music, art, and teaching!

Let us know how we can minister to you through Chatham UMC’s music program and our music groups: the Covenant Choir, the Praise Band, the Wesley Ringers, and the Ukulele Orchestra. Contact music director, Peter Hill at petepiano@mac.com.
Chatham UMC has begun an effort to collect funds and then distribute those donations as reparations each time the congregation sings a Spiritual during the Sunday service. Early American Black Hymns and Spiritual Songs whose authors were not recorded never received the payment that they deserved when their music was published. This effort on their behalf is a small, but powerful, way to honor their enormously important contributions to the lexicon of hymnody. CUMC will soon send our first donation to the Newark Boys Chorus School. Our efforts in this manner will be ongoing.
