All are welcome to join us this Sunday, October 30^thfrom 5-6PM in Rodda Hall. Entrance is free, though any donations will go to RISE. Come enjoy the taco bar and hot chocolate, as well as Mexican music and a moment of reflection. If you would like us to honor the memory of a loved one who is deceased, please bring a small portrait photograph of them when you come.

We Remember

After spending the last few years battling health concerns, and the last few weeks in hospice surrounded by loved ones, Jacqueline Underhill entered Life Eternal on October 24, 2022. Her husband Donald Underhill has been our good and faithful custodian and maintenance manager here at Chatham UMC for the past 28 years. She is survived by her Husband, Donald Underhill; her children, Martinia Caldwell, Mark McCollough, and Jermaine “Jay” McCollough; her grand and great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty Jones and her brother Willie Caldwell and a host of other family and friends.

We will host a Memorial Service for Jacqueline on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM followed by a reception lunch in Rodda Hall sometime after 1PM. One of Jacqueline's pastors is the Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Woods of the Phillips Baptist Church, who will preside at the service. We expect over 300 people to attend. Donald and Jacqueline are known and loved by many, many people.

Sarah Circle to Meet Tuesday, November 1^st

The Sarah Circle will meet on November 1st at 10:00 a.m. in the Asbury Room. Our program will be Dr. Ashley Boggan Dreff recently named General Secretary of the General Commission on Archives and History (GCAH) and located at Drew University. This position will both carry-on and strengthen GCAH’s mission to promote and care for the historical interests of The United Methodist Church at every level. All are welcome.

All Saints Day Service is next week,

Sunday, November 6^th

Sunday, November 6^th will be our All Saints Day Special Service at 10:00 AM. This is an ancient tradition in which Christians remember loved ones who have finished their courses in faith, and now live in the heavenly realm. We will light candles in their memory, speak their names, toll the bell, and give God thanks for their lives and their homecoming into Eternal Life.

A list of names of loved ones will be outside the Sanctuary until this Sunday, October 30^th. We invite you to add names to this list if your loved one is not on it.

Deadline for all name submissions is Monday, October 31^st at 10:00 AM.

Help us provide Thanksgiving in a Box for our neighbors in need. Just use the "Bingo Card" as a guide and fill a box. Boxes will be collected on Saturday, November 12^th at the church in the rear parking lot from 10am-12noon. This is our 3^rd year doing this very successful event!

Book Review: This Land is Their Land

November is National Native American Heritage Month. Silverman’s book subtitled: “The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving” is an excellent review of the early American history of Plymouth Colony and features the interactions of Native Americans with the colonists who came to Massachusetts Bay. While we celebrate a day of Thanksgiving and family get-togethers each November, some Native people hold a Day of Mourning and rightfully so, given how they were treated in the 1600’s.

Here we meet Ousamequin, the Wampanoag chief of those peaceful Native Americans, who, with Plymouth’s early governor, John Carver, develop a friendship and a commitment to mutual defense. They get together for a “First Thanksgiving” at Plymouth, but the somewhat tenuous relationship lasts only until mistrust and fear grow between the English and the Wampanoags, leading to King Philip’s War in 1675.

While this is not necessarily a “Christian” book, it does highlight a particular relationship, challenge us to re-examine how we view history and how we honor and respect our neighbors.

Adult Discussion Group

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” Was Zacchaeus somehow lost? What was his sin? On Sunday the Adult Discussion Group will explore sin and the story of Zacchaeus. The CUMC Church Council has voted unanimously to follow the CDC Covid Data tracker for Morris County to evaluate weekly Covid levels. Going forward, this tracker will help guide us in determining our indoor mask usage for all CUMC functions. Covid levels and recommendations are updated weekly on Thursday nights by the CDC. These updates will be used at CUMC from Friday-Friday and will state if masks required (high level) or optional (medium/low).
