Let's Meet Nashirah (The Jewish Chorale of Greater Philadelphia)

Learn about the history of the only auditioned Jewish choral ensemble in Philadelphia. President Cynthia Silber, MD, board member Arthur Feldman, MD, and other choir members will share and discuss several pieces of music, as well as the history of Nashirah. We'll also meet the conductor/artistic director of the choir: Dr. Julia Zavadsky, professor of music at Temple University and the Curtis Institute of Music. She will talk about her journey as an immigrant conductor from Kiev, Ukraine, through Jerusalem and making her way to Philadelphia. Next AJ Grandparents Group Meeting

We are very happy to welcome Dvora Entin back for our next Grandparents’ Group meeting. Dvora brought many insights to us in our last session to help us deal with and understand the psychological and emotional impact of Covid on our relationships with our grandchildren. All those in attendance really enjoyed the evening.
For our next session, Dvora will speak on “Communication Strategies with Grandchildren.” This discussion will focus on practical tips and techniques for fostering fun, interesting and relaxing conversations with our grandchildren. Did you every wonder why the question “How was your day?” might often fall flat, while sometimes your inquiries might just hit the right note and your grandchild won’t stop talking? If so, we know you will enjoy hearing Dvora.
You won’t want to miss this evening of practical tips for building closer relationships with all age groups, including junior high, high school, and post-high school grandchildren.

A Jewish Call to Climate Action: Confronting the Climate Crisis and Cultivating Spiritual Courage

Congregation Adath Jeshurun members have been invited to join Dayenu for a new workshop, “A Jewish Call to Climate Action: Confronting the Climate Crisis and Cultivating Spiritual
In this workshop, led by the staff from Dayenu, we will explore how we are contending with the climate crisis on a personal and spiritual level. If you feel anxious, fearful, or sad about the climate crisis, or worried about how it might impact you, your family, or community, you are not alone. If you haven’t made space in a busy and ever-changing world to sit with the reality of a changing climate, you are not the only one.
This will be an engaging workshop in which we will begin to explore some of our concerns and questions the climate crisis raises, in a supportive community, rooted in Jewish wisdom and tradition, and building on an emerging body of thought focused on meeting the climate crisis with resilience. We will provide pathways for people to confront and move through feelings of fear, anxiety, and powerlessness and offer other pathways towards meaningful and bold action. If you are ready to move from fear, overwhelm, or numbness into courageous action on climate — or even, like many of us, you are not sure you are ready — please join us!

Hebrew Ulpan Series: Ten Monday Mornings with Mika (via Zoom)

Hazzan Glantz invites you to a new Ulpan series on Zoom. The classes will take place on Zoom, Mondays at 9:30 AM. This is a class intended for those who are already Hebrew readers but wish to speak some conversational Hebrew. The first class will be April 19 and run through June 28, with May 17 off for Shavuot.
So... what, you ask, is an ulpan? The concept of the ulpan developed quickly with the massive influx of new immigrants to the newly established State of Israel in 1948. We cannot re-create that experience complete with the reinforcement that comes from daily efforts to use the language. But our instructor will borrow from the well-known and successful ulpan technique to help you begin to use and express yourself in the living language of Hebrew.
Now about our instructor. Mika Meidar comes highly recommended as a Hebrew Ulpan teacher in the IDF where she served from 2013 to 2015 as an NCO in education. Since then, she has added skills to her resume from graphic design to bartending... in Scotland! Mika is currently a college student at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan. At 9:30 AM on Mondays it is 3:30 AM in Israel which works perfectly in Mika's schedule to hop onto Zoom and teach.

An Opportunity for Teens: The Diller Teen Fellows Program
The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is honored to partner with the Diller Teen Fellows program, an incredible experiential learning, traveling and growth experience for 10th and 11th graders.
The program aims to build the next generation of committed Jewish leaders: to inspire and empower a global network of teens and equip them with the skills, confidence, knowledge and Jewish values they need to help create a better world. Each year, hundreds of young people take part in the Diller training program from 32 communities across the U.S., Canada, South Africa, Australia, South America, Europe and Israel.

Paid Summer Internships Available
Do you know a current Jewish college sophomore or junior? Tell them about the Franklin C. Ash Summer Internship Progam? Applications are being taken now and there are limited spaces. This is a paid summer internship.
The Franklin C. Ash Summer Internship Program offers mentoring, networking, and workplace experiences for high-achieving Jewish college students interested in nonprofit career paths. You can learn more here.
Lasko College Prep Program
The Lasko College Prep Program now offers two tracks this summer for FREE* college counseling and SAT test prep guidance. Each program is tailored to meet students where they are in the college planning process and offers evening classes to accommodate the schedules active of high school students.
College Readiness:
Eligibility: Rising juniors in fall of 2021 interested in beginning the college planning process. Program includes: 10 hours of group SAT test prep; 10 hours of group college-themed workshops (topics include: Basic Pre-SAT Prep, Curating a High School Curriculum, Exploring Potential Career Interests, Debunking College Myths, Financing Your Education, etc.); and 2 one-hour individual counseling sessions with an Educational Counselor.
College Prep:
Eligibility: Rising seniors in the fall of 2021 looking for guidance through the intricate college application and financial aid processes. Program includes: 10 hours of group SAT test prep; 14 hours of group workshops (topics include: Completing the Common App, Resources for Scholarships, College Essay Writing, Jewish Life on Campus, Transition to College, Choosing the Right Colleges, etc., and additional Family FAFSA workshop in fall 2021); and unlimited individual college counseling sessions throughout
senior year.

Kleinlife: Montgomery County suspended onsite activities in March 2020. As of October 2020, they have begun to offer programs via Zoom! You can see the calendar offering learning sessions, yoga, and more here.
