AJ Adult Ed Presents Hebrew Jumpstart!

Sunday, December 3 at 9:00 AM

Hebrew_Jumpstart_CC image

Consisting of two levels of classes—one for pure beginners (refreshing their knowledge of the aleph-bet and “decoding” Hebrew words) and another for those with more advanced Hebrew skills—we’ll engage in a marathon Sunday session. Choose from December 3 or February 4. Devoted primarily to assist congregants in davening in Hebrew as well as reading and comprehension, those interested in the basic level can also enroll in a class to receive follow-up guided practice sessions to hone the skills they acquire.

Level 1: Elementary decoding, with Rabbi Peretz Rodman, PhD. Dr. Rodman is a Hebrew educator based in Jerusalem and has a PhD in Bible studies from Brandeis University.

Level 2: The intermediate level Jumpstart class will focus on comprehension and vocabulary both for synagogue Hebrew and Israel. Rav Shai will focus on one text each hour from the prayerbook and tease apart how the roots, prefixes, suffixes, and binyanim combine to give words their meaning.

The Hebrew Jumpstart is free of charge. These sessions will be from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There will be a lunch break from noon to 1:00 PM. Bring your own dairy lunch to enjoy, and we'll supply snacks, water, coffee, and tea.

Click here to register for either date.

Follow-up Guided Practice Sessions for December 3, Level 1 Attendees

Those congregants who take the Level 1 class can choose to take in-person follow-up classes with Tamar Kamionkowski, who will teach them on Thursday nights for six weeks: December 7 and 14, and January 4, 11, 17, and 25. The classes will run from 7:45 PM to 9:15 PM. The cost of this series is $60 and you can sign up for it on the form for the Hebrew Jumpstart (see above) or here.

Gratz Lunch and Learn with Rav Shai:

Is Food Grown in a Lab Kosher?

Thursday, December 7 at 12:00 PM

Rav Shai will be teaching this session at Gratz College. Can modern food technology enable us to create a kosher cheese burger? What about a BLT? We’ll examine the legal, philosophical, and religious issues of the brave food frontier. But even if traditionally treif foods could technically be consumed, should they be? Orthodox and Conservative opinions have been rendered. We’ll look, but at this session, we won’t taste! 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. In-person only. $23/person. You can register at https://tinyurl.com/gratz120723.

Adult Ed Series: Awe

Begins Sunday, December 10 at the Holodec

This year, Rav Shai will oversee a wide-ranging exploration of the concept of “awe”— what it is, how we experience it, and the effect it can have on our lives. We will explore the topic from four viewpoints, including musical, artistic, natural, and the written word. On Sunday, December 10, the first session, Wild Awe, will take participants to the Holodec, a virtual reality arcade. We'll strap on a pair of goggles and “experience” those natural phenomena right here in Philadelphia’s Fishtown. The Holodec is located at 1516 N. 5th Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19122. We'll start promptly at 1:00 PM.

Please note: Registration for the Awe series is for all four parts: Wild Awe, Musical Awe (in late January/early February), Artistic Awe (in the spring), and Awe of the Written Word (on Saturday, May 18). The cost for the series is $100. Space is limited for the first session at the Holodec, so RSVP ASAP...first come, first served. Click here to register.

AJ ACTS Announces Commitment to ADL’s Kulanu Initiative: Synagogues In Action Against Antisemitism

kilanu-logo-1200-top-page image

We need as many as 10 AJ members willing to play an active role in helping address Anti-Jewish hatred in our community. This may be the most important thing that you will do in your lifetime to safeguard our community from the growing wave of anti-Jewish hatred in America.

Kulanu, Hebrew for “all of us,” is an eight-month program, dedicated to empowering congregations to address antisemitism and hate in their communities through education, community engagement, and advocacy.

During the program, AJ ACTS will join a network of congregations to build bridges of understanding across communities. ADL will prepare us with resources to develop and implement engaging and impactful programming through access to extensive resources, interactive webinars with ADL experts, and guidance from ADL professionals.

As a Kulanu synagogue, AJ will learn how to have critical conversations about antisemitism and other forms of bigotry and cultivate the tools to fight them.

AJ’s commitment to Kulanu requires us to:

  • Form a working group that oversees Kulanu programming in your community in collaboration with Rav Shai who will serve as our  clergy liaison
  • Promote reporting of antisemitic and bias incidents to ADL.
  • Implement two programs or initiatives, one of which engages an external audience beyond our synagogue community.
  • Participate in Kulanu webinars.
  • Engage in a community of practice for at least two meetings.
  • Share impact at the end of the program.
